Whispering pines: A decent place to stay
Club Mahindra has its hotel, called Whispering Pines in Mashobra, about forty minutes from Shimla city.It has a gym, play area for children,a restraurant, spa .
Unique Quality: just outside is a medical shop owned by Mr.Sharma, who arranges cars and tours. He is very reasonable and helpful. Also near by are houses that would cook a meal for you on request and they are affordable and the food is fresh and great.

Heritage Hotel: A little history on a budget
In an effort to keep the price down, we tried this place on our second visit to Shimla. We had actually looked at before we left for Manali. They have kept the original features, with a new extension out the back. The rooms are centred around a wooden panelled lounge/dining room. The rooms have original fireplaces which unfortunately don't work. Comfortable double bed, TV and small sitting area. Unfortunately when we were there, it was January and cold. The pipes had frozen up so no showers. We were brought two buckets of hot water on the second day. They don't have heating, but plenty of bed covers.
Popular with the monkeys, don't worry they can't get in!
There is information on the history of this place in the hall leading to the lounge. The staff are friendly. We paid 800 rupees. This is a budget hotel, we found that prices were higher in Shimla compared to Darjeeling.
Unique Quality: Comfortable, yet cold (it was January).

Mayur Hotel: Great views over Shimla and Christchurch
We were here in January and it was cold. This was the first place that we looked at as it was freezing, raining and very windy. I looked at a few rooms which varied in Budget and condition. Our room was colourful and bright with great views. Comfortable double bed, TV and hot shower. We paid extra for a little heater. The kitchen was shut between 12-1pm. They took our order at 12pm and and served us at 1pm. The staff were okay. We paid 1150 a night including heating. This was with a 30% discount.
Unique Quality: Great views overlooking Shimla.

Hotel Classic: Hotel Classic
Located at the western end of The Mall, this hotel lies on top of the hill so its a bit of a climb if coming from the train station. The room was a good size and opened out onto a pathway with open gate (kind of like challets on a holiday camp). The room featured a large doublebed, coffee table, 2 wooden arm chairs, TV with remote, mirror and small table, 24hr hot water via geyser tank. The views from the back of the room are very good plus you're not overlooked. All-in-all, not a bad place but Shimla is very cold when I visited in mid November and I ended up sleeping in all my clothes despite having a thick quilt and a blanket. Cost was Rs440 per night.

The Combomere: The Friendly Luxurious Hotel in Shimla
The Combermere is a lovely hotel filled with authentic Indian charimsa - but in a very pleasant Western Style - the rooms have air conditioning, are large and very functionally set out - Not what I would call luxurious but very well styled.
The service from The Combomere is delightfull, prompt and very personal.
Would definitely recommend this hotel
When you visit the Bar - say Hello to Surender, the Bar Man - a fabulous man who always has a smile for everyone.
The Cafe on the top of the Combermere Hotel does the most delicious Chocolate Cakes - to die for !!!!
The restaurant sells mainly Indian dishes and they are prepared very well
Unique Quality: The functional feel of the hotel - combined with the Indian way - quite unique I felt
'Surender' the Barman - completely unique

Hotel Amber: In front of a Tibetan temple
Nice place to stay. Not so far from bus station to direction Kufri and Solan. Also in the heart of an alley where I can find many resto and Indian snacks.
Unique Quality: In front of my room at the 4th floor is facing to a Tibetan temple. I like to hear the bell ringing every morning and evening. So peaceful.

City-View Hotel: Balconies, valley view and budget prices!
We stayed two nights at the CotyView Hotel in a great room that was on the top floor at the front of the hotel and had a lovely balcony where you could sit out and enjoy the sunsets in the evening. We paid Rs. 300 for a double in the off-season but the tariffs seemed highly dependent on time of year and location of room. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was a restaurant downstairs that also did room service so you can splash-out and a have a lazy breakfast in bed as I did one morning!!
Unique Quality: The sunny balcony is definitely a big selling-point! The room also had wonderful decor that was a little bit like being in a ships cabin with wood-pannelling, inset mirrors and above the bed (and I wished I had takena photo) was a garish bedhead in blue, marone and purple velvet shaped like an opening fan!
Only drawback is the number of stairs and it is a little bit of a walk from the main part of town.

Hotel Mehman: Comfortable but a bit Pricey (for a Budget place)
We had three nights in Shimla and stayed only one of them here as we moved to some cheaper accommodation for the rest of our stay. By this stage we were thinking in Rupees and even though the Rs 440 double room charge came to about AUS$7 each a night it was exensive by Indian Budget Hotel standards and it was the principle of the thing that mattered to us!!
We stayed in Winter and thus it was the low season expect these tariffs to at least doble if you are plannig to stay in the Summer. The hotel itself is situated facing westwards and the rooms at the front would have quite nice views down the valley. It is shame there were no balconies as it would have been lovely to sit out the front and soak up the winter sun while we were there. There was also a restaurant downstairs that served Indian/Continental food although we didn't eat at it.
Unique Quality: Our room was a absolute scream when it came to decor!! If you like Green in all its shades you would have loved this room: dark green carpet, light green walls, bright green velvet chairs and floral green curtains!
Decor aside it was certainly confortable and we had really soft beds and good water pressure in the shower. Another bonus was that the hot water Geyser switch (for our room at least) was INSIDE the room meaning you don't have to do battle with a hotellier determined that you only keep the water on for 1/2 and hour a day (will explain this scenario when i finally get a Rishikesh VT Page up!)
