Couple of questions re trip to Leh

by sukan

Hallo VTers,

I would like to ask you for a help. I plan to go to Leh in the 2nd half of August. I will arrive to Delhi and then I plan to continue to go through Manali to leh. In this respect I have the following questions:

i) Is it easy to book a bus from Delhi to Manali and from Manali to Leh once in India or is it better to book in advance? Do you have any links where I can check times/fares?
ii) Is it safe to take overnight buses?
iii) What is the safety situation in Jammu and Kashmir? Is it ok or is it somehow dangerous?
iv) Is easy to find a hotel/hostel once I arrive to Leh or is it recommendable to book it in advance?

Thanks a lot!!!

Leh is a beautiful place. Going to Leh by road (from Manali) adds a lot of fun and adventure to the journey. There is a website where you can book buses from Delhi to Manali. These are mostly overnight buses. They are confortable but you may not be able to get a sound sleep. Try Volvo buses. They are better than others. While in Delhi, there are numerous travel agents in Pahar ganj/Karol bagh area who offer bus tickets on Delhi Manali route. Online bus seat booking for Himachal, UP, Rajasthan from Delhi. I have not used this website.
The buses on Manali-Leh route are seasonal, meaning they run only in particular months. I guess they run from April to Oct-Nov. Rest of the m onths, because of heave snowfall, the road route remains closed.
Leh although a part of Kashmir, is not a disturbed area at all. This part of the state is away from the Srinagar valley area, where most of the incident occurs.
The ticket for the bus journey from Manali to leh ban be best purchased at Manali itself. I understand the journey takes 2 days, with a night stay at an intermediate place.
Leh has numerous hotels. No need to book in advance. But if you want to book in advance, it will be advicable.

You need book any buses in advance from Delhi to manali. You can easily get the tickets for this as there are lots of services in this line. Volvos and Non AC coaches are always on this trek. I suggest you to book tickets for LEH as soon as you reach Manali becuase I have doubt about this as this is the peak season to visit Leh. It is completely safe to travel in night in these buses and I do most of my journeys in night. J & K situation is little critical but it does not effect much in regions of Leh & Ladakh. Hotels again I would prefer you to book in advance, the reason remains the same. Visit ladakh website for this. If you are planning for some trekking or something, I can help only if you want.

haapy to help.

Hi SUkan

if you are traveling to leh-ladakh around mid to end august, let me know if you would like to travel together. here are youare answers

Himachal and Delhi tourism organize buses to manali. better to book leh to manali and manali to leh in advance. google ladakh travel - you will hit a lot of travel agencies. situation in ladakh, kashmir is safe - so safe to travel. august is peak season - so finding hotels is a little dicey.

in short, better to book in advance

Travel Tips for Leh

Clear blue Sky

by verasingh

Most loveable thing about Leh is its unspoilt beauty! It's unpolluted, away from the world and quite remote.
Please go to Thiksey Monastry positively and attend the morning prayer. It will take you to another spiritual experience ! I really miss the peacepul atmosphere and vast stretches of unrealistic mountains.

Local drinks: Leh Berry

by call_me_rhia

Leh Berry is a fruit juice made from berry called seabuckthorn - whatever this is. It's sweet and really good and - if you read the back of the package - it says that it has many properties, including anti-aging & anti- oxidant properties. Anti aging??? As soon as I noticed it I started drinking galls of it, just in case it really works. It's also believed to be an energiser and memory strenghtener... another plus, I guess

The royal palaces........

by mantru

The only place which drives all travellers to leh is the mini potala or leh palace........that was the residence of the royal family till they were banished to Stok place .where they still reside now........
the third palace is the basgo place on the way to Likir-Alchi....

Basgoo "Basgoo Rabtan Chartsekher" West of Leh was built by king Jamyang Namgyal and Singey Namgyal in 16th Century AD. Singey Namgyal made three storey copper guilt of Maitriya Buddha, as a memorial of his father Jamyang Namgyal.

Spituk Monastry

by mantru

This monastery is built on a lone rocky hill on the right bank of Indus, eight km away from the town of Leh towards Srinagar. It is one of the most influntial monastries of the 'Yello Hat' the Ge-lugs-pa order has as its subsidary, the Shankar Gompa. Built in the 15th century on the ruins of a 11th century gompa, the Spituk gompa has as its abbot the Kushak Bakula( Kushak is an incarnate head lama of a monastry who has attained highest form of training of Buddhism). The dhukhang has a veranda with the usual frescos of the Wheel of Life and other Buddhist symbols. The kangyur and Tangyur lie stacked on one side, while wall paintings adorn the walls. Statues of the Avalokiteswara and Yamantaka stand on either side of te seat of Dalai Lama and Kushak Bakula. On the altar can be seen standing the statues of the fifth Dalai Lama and the 18th Kushak Bakula, along with those of Sakyamuni and another Buddha.

There are some interesting rooms which contain some very old and rare statues and other articles, but unfortunately now these are closed as some things were stolen.
