Manali-Leh Roadtrip mid of August 2010
by deblai
I'm planning a roadtrip to Leh via Manali mid of August 2010 (sometime around the 18th) and i'm looking for like-minded buddies who is as excited as i am to do this amazing Himalayan roadtrip. Anyone interested? please email me at deblai@hotmail.com.
Can anyone tell me how long does it take from Manali to Leh by car (rented or Jeep or Bus). Is it possible to reach Leh from Manali in 2 days? and is 4 days exploring in Leh sufficient? If i rent a car (Innova), do i have to book in advance or can i do it when i reach Manali?

It took me 2 full days to reach Leh from Manali by jeep but was worth it. The mountains scenery is awesome. but sadly it was not easy leaving Leh the same way as the night before there was heavy rain and after six hours down the road heading back to Manali we where forced back to Leh due to Landslides and raging rivers over flowing and top of that it took another 2 days to get out by plane as it could not land due cloudy weather and could not find the hole to land through.
4 days is enough in Leh but there are many other areas around leh that are worth exploring aswell including trekking in the Martha Valley region on the otherside of the Indus River at the bottom of Leh.

Travel Tips for Leh
Leh travel
by highspirits
Great to know u r travelling to Leh.. i had been there last year and it was one of my most beautiful traveling experience.
I dont know if its really safe traveling alone since u r a girl...now with respect to finding travel mate..i m sure u can find many travelers..better would be find travel mates in manaili itself...u can share Jeep or Scorpio or traxx for traveling to leh...its gonna be 18 hrs difficult journey via sarchu...its beautiful enroute but be prepared for rains too..which might convert ur trip into 2 days ..u shall be starting ur day at 4 in morning and reaching leh city by around 11 pm...well i m sure u dont need to book ur hotel from delhi as u will find many in Leh. u will get very decent rooms for the budget u mentioned.u dont need any help from travel agents..u just need to book urself for a taxi from manali to leh..find hotel in leh...make ur daily plans for traveling around leh..from the centre of the city(market). u will find many service operators.u can take up white water rafting in ravi sutlej or mountain biking from kardungla pass at 18000 ft for 40 km down to leh city ..its one of a experince in life..
if u r tough i dont think u will find problem acclimatizing urself ...pangong is must do...i had been there on bike for a day...not sure if its too good for night as its very windy...its a difficult terrain...so be careful as i had fallen of the bike...just sharing my experience...dont be scared:) u can visit many monastaries there ..major one would be thiksey , hemis, spituk to name a few.
Its not very expensive place to travel...just be careful what u go for..if u need any help..would love to share...have a great time...
Ur travel plans made me once think to travel again to leh..which i surely wanna do again but maybe not this year as tied up with work..
cheers The white water rafting and mountain biking experience from khardungla at 18000 ft to the main leh city.
Pangong was like a montain desert with beauitful lake with different colors in the sky.
PEEP-PEEP, DONT SLEEP...

*** Besides the weather and the three snow-bound passes, there are about 200 identified avalanche zones between Manali and Leh, which are require regular monitoring by the BRO, specially during winter in order to keep the road motorable.
Packing List
by j-san
I didnt bring anything really but for some clothes. All I could need was available in Leh. Bring an extra bag though for the fantastic crafts!! I bought this solid wood and metal handcrafted box, as well as some beautiful silver and shawls! One should bargain - but bargain friendly! :) Security at Leh airport is TIGHT! Do not take batteries of any sort into your hand luggage. You will only have to give them up and then try and pick them up again after landing.
Highest Motorable Pass KHARDUNG LA
by kin79
One thing that maked me feel extremely proud of being an Indian was when we went to the pass called Khardung La (La means Pass in Tibetan, the local language) which is about a three hour drive from Leh City.. It is the World's Highesh Motorable Mountain Pass. The altitude of this pass is 18380ft. The pass, on the Karakoram range in South Pullu, lies 40 km (25 mi) north of Leh and is the gateway to the Nubra Valley where the Siachen Glacier lies. Built in 1976, it was opened to motor vehicles in 1988 and has since seen many automobile, motorbike and mountain biking expeditions. Maintained by the Indian Army's 14 Corps, the pass is strategically important to India as it is used to carry essential supplies to the Siachen. Khardung pass was also historically used as a caravan route to Central Asia. About 10,000 horses and camels took the route annually, and a small population of Bactrian camels can still be seen in the area standing as witness to history. It is listed in the Guinness Book of Records [1] as the "Highest Motorable Road". The Karakoram Highway is the highest international road (4,850 m). You will find a lot of Indian soldiers in this area. When u reach the Pass, they also make hot tea for you and that too complimentary from the Indian Army.
must go Pangong lake
by mantru
One of the must go to places is the pangong lake.....the crystal blue salty water is a wow...the backdrop of the barren mountains...white clouds floating above......and the deep blue waters......you'll hold your breath when u see it for the first time........however to reach there and back takes an awful lot of time.........i mean driving on a bumpy road.....
