Freedom Palace: Pahalgam VERY CHEAP, basic and shanti rooms
It was questionable whether I went to Kashmir as I heard how expensive it can be, especially Phalagam during the Yatra season in July and August. I found a quiet place about 2 km up in the foot hills of Pahalagam Town. Quite honestly if I hadn't found this area I wouldn't have stayed in Pahalgam long a tall as too busy and with the steep prices.
Freedom Palace is in such a quiet place and full of nature that I ended up staying here longer. It is placed in a very quiet area in the hills but in walking distance of the town but you can also hire a tuktuk out to get you up and down the hill throughout the non snow season if you don't like walking.
Baba Bashir runs this small place and rents out for 200-300INDR, all with shared bathrooms....he will also cook you breakfast and dinner in the evening for extra.....and invite you for a chat. Set in beautiful surroundings and extremely quiet.
The place can be hard to find so is best to ring Bashir so he can meet you in town to take you there.
Unique Quality: Rock bottom prices,beautiful views and very quiet. Baba Bashir will make you feel at home.

Bente's Lodge: For beautiful scenery and 'shanti'
Found some peace very close to the busy town of Pahalagam would you believe. Palahagam town is very let's say 'not that appealing' but if you go into the foothills (about 2km...by rickshaw 150INDR) I found a lovely place called Bente's Lodge. In fact there is a choice of 3 Guest houses that belong to the same owner one above the other. Lots of nature and wildlife all around and you can explore the foothills by foot all around or if you just want to relax they have a lovely big front and back garden to sit in to admire the view.Many gypsies and shepherds in this area along with their resident cow that likes a lot of strokes.The walk down to town I felt 'could' be a little scary for single women on their own as it is remote in areas I found that the staff would often be walking down and accompany you. Don't expect a wide choice of food though. I ended up extending my stay another week!
A great get away!
Unique Quality: Great views and away from the crowds, also cheap for that area. I was paying 700INDR

Loding and bording: Hotel Brown Palace
Description: the place is ideally located with the lidder river running past it in the front. the hotel building is from early 70s - the rooms are varied, the furnishings are comfortable , some rooms are unsuited.
Brown Palace, in Pahalgam, is not a Hotel or Lodge. It is a home away from home for the hundreds of trekking enthusiasts that visit it. We specialize in simple home cooked meals, both western and Indian, and have every modern amenity including hot showers, clean cozy rooms with great views, and a quiet location 15 minutes walk from the city.

Himalaya House: staying in paradise
If you are looking for a place to stay by the riverside and to have some peace and quiet from your travels around India this is the place to stay. The hotel is very neat and clean and the service is excellent with an abundance of food and kashmiri tea. The trekking is beautiful and everything you need for camping is provided and the guides are excellent. There are also beautiful walks in the area and much fun is had in the numerous pony rides are available int eh area.
Unique Quality: 24 hours hot water, own western bathrooms, satellite TV available in the lounge rooms along with board games. All food is included and beautiful gardens by the river to sit and relax.
