The traditional houseboats at Srinagar are world famous and each of them are hand-made at Srinagar. When you are staying at the houseboat, do take time to admire the detailed wooden carvings, shapes, patterns etc. It is indeed an unique experience staying in the houseboat, this is something to be remembered forever :)
Srinagar is a wonderful town right in the center of Kashmir valley and is also the capital of Kashmir. . Actually the airport is outside the city and on the way to city, all you will see is security forces.
Then you shall move across river Jhelum to finally reach Dal Gate. Srinagar is located around three lakes which are interconnected. Dal lake is overcrowded with houseboats and small gondola like boats called Shikara. The houseboats I would say are the best place to stay, its a totally different experience. The interiors have exquisite woodwork. If you are looking for peace and calm , look for a houseboat around Nagina lake. The area is not at all crowded and the best part is you can hire a Shikara at throw away prices to go all around the city, by water. Look for cheap handicrafts, start bargaining at half the price quoted.
