I am pretty sure this operator had our houseboats when I took tours to Kashmir They were all individually named with greek gods names, I stayed in the Athena House boat, and I don't remember the second one. I highly recommend the house boat experience in Srinagar.

Also a must is a sunrise boatride on Lake Dal. It is truly surreal. Also try to get to a rug/carpet factory, when they display the carpets. A good way is to find out from the houtel/house boat when a tour group visits one of them and plan accordingly. It is like stepping back in time several hundred years, and the salesman and his helper are straight out of ancient history, and the flair and pomp and circumstance is amazing. Have a great time in Kashmir......d:o)

Houseboats are a dime a dozen in Srinagar, but most of them are not A Class houseboats. The reliable operators I know of are Athena and Meena Houseboats. In Srinagar besides Lalit,Broadway is a good hotel.

Well, the houseboats are like hotels, both good and bad. And yes Athena is as you say Class A. However it is a part of the Srinagar/Lake Dal experience for visitors. To New Yorkers, Times Square is just another street, but not to visitors..

I still highly recommend that you go for the houseboats, - of high quality of course.

What I meant was that be sure to pick only A Category houseboats and 1 night stay on a houseboat should be good enough for the experience, cosidering the security angle.Another thing bargain hard and you will get good rates for hotels and houseboats as not many tourists going there.

Travel Tips for Srinagar

Streets of Srinagar

by victorwkf

When you are at Srinagar, you should explore the streets to experience the local people as well as the historical architecture of the old buildings of the old city area of Srinagar. One of the best places to explore are the shop-houses and bazaars surrounding the Jama Masjid (biggest mosque in Srinagar). Here, you will see the local people going about their daily life at the shops, market etc.

Please note that because Srinagar is predominantly Muslims, you will see mostly men on the streets and women tend to be shy and often not wished to be photographed (you need to do it discretely). Other than that, the people of Srinagar are generally friendly.
