Hi Tim,
I can understand the situation you are in. Its tough to find a "cheap sociable" place in Bangalore, but nothing is impossible.
You should try areas like Jay Nagar, JP Nagar etc in South Bangalore. You will find the kind of places you want around there.
I suggest you pick a copy of the ebook Know Bangalore from www.knowbangalore.com. This is a must read for newcomers into the city. Has all kinds of info.
Best of luck.
Travel Tips for Bangalore
Viewing the 'Taj Mahal'
by topoftheworl
If you are lucky enough to be there on a moonlit night, it literally glitters. As it is a Mausoleum, you have to take your shoes off to walk on it. This a custom at most 'holy' places. Leave your best shoes behind, and hold on to the ticket you get in the shoe area.
A local Dive worth the detour
by cochinjew about Akram Tea Corner
Brewed and prepared especially for the throngs of people who stand on the roadside at this teastall.. as it has now for generations.. over 5000 cups per day..
no seating or anything, you just stand outside and order your tea and within minutes it is ready and it is a pleasure to watch it being brewed and prepared with loving tender care. all of this for two rupees.
they sell also biscuits and such, there is a daily special of cake and tea for three rupees Brewed Tea. The best I tasted in bangalore.
this place is at the corner of dispensary road and the old hospital cross road ( from the british days), around the corner from commercial street near the shop khadi bandar which sells lovely kurtas in cotton

The headquarters of the company I work for is situated at Bangalore. So are the headquarters of nearly all the software firms this side of the Khyber Pass. Bangalore, affectionately called the Silicon Valley of India, is a city of numerous paradoxes. You see traditional hindu festivals clebrated with great gusto and at the same time, beer and liquor light up the evenings at the hundreds of pubs scattered around the city. The affluence of the yuppies mixes well with the retired dignity of military personnel. One thing that is striking here is the serious lack of people speaking the native tongue of Bangalore, Kannada. Nearly everyone speaks English or Hindi (India's national language). A good percentage of the people also speak Tamil.
