Humble Folks, Genuine People
by cochinjew
It is true in Bangalore, like it is elsewhere in Asia. Humble people are less pretentious ( i suppose humble people everywhere would be!), genuine as they know how to be and a pleasure to be with.
The rigid caste system of India relegates people born into circumstances beyond their control into strata from which there is very little escape.
This family I met during my recent stay is such a case. Because of their caste, the mother could work as a maid at various houses, earning about 2000 inr ( 30 euros ) per month, from which she had to pay for english medium education for her two daughters.
How nice to take them to Cuba and educate them there, I thought foolishly. from my previous experiences, it is always bad to detribalize people geographically however difficult their present situations are.
Instead I will help them to become educated, so that they too can dream about being doctors and IT people and tell foreigners who call into the call centres their names are Debra and Natalie! but live well in their own society: the decaying Indian society

Youth Hostel is something sensible, simple and cheap.
One can find hotels of almost every shape, size and Rating in Bangalore. If you are tourist stick to hotels in areas like Majestic and surroundings, where it is cheaper and convinient for the buses as well as the trains.
If bugdet is slightly higher there are some great places near the residency road, richmond road, Koramangala and Airport Road. Also Jayanagar, Malleshwaram, Vijaynagar, Banashakari, BTM layout-JP Nagar and Basavanagudi areas cater to Mid-Segment travellers.
Star hotels are in large numbers, the popular ones are as listed.
Leela Palace on Airport Road, Windor Manor near the Golf Course, Taj West End near the Race Course, The Oberoi on the MG Road and Taj Residency next to it.
