Local Market
by Kumarjit about Gandhi Bazar
The first time I went to Bangalore, I was told that Gandhi Bazar, in Basavanagudi, is a good place for shopping. In fact, after talking to some local people I came to know that it's very popular with the budget shoppers. However, when I visited Gandhi Bazar, I was completely shocked to see the conjested and dirty appearance of the entire area. Vehicles ply either way on the narrow road, which has been made even narrower by the fruits and vegetable hawkers selling their stuff on the road itself! Nothing impressive! There are shops selling cheap clothes, cosmetics and accessories. Certain local food joints can be seen which are of medium standard. However, nothing special to buy. It's a cheap market. But be careful if you are a foreigner or are coming here for the first time. The store keepers may charge you more. Try to bargain, or even better, try not to buy anything from here.
Look for the Exotic
by cochinjew
For many outsiders, India gives off a touch of exoticism, and I am no exception. I found the dark skinned dravidian people very attractive, became friendly with street vendors who invited me to their houses and plied me with gifts, legacies of Cathay and Nippon.. not to mention the Moslems, Hindus, Untouchables (high and low)..
If the Indians are not friendly to you, it is because, we as outsiders, consciously or unconsciously have built walls around ourselves. Saying things like: is water safe to drink? ( in majority of the states in the USA water is not safe to drink because of pesticide accumulation), or not making an attempt to say a word or two in the local languguage, flocking to third rate pizza places with your compatriots rather than hunk down with locals in hygienic and certainly much superior nutrititous food....all this counts against you..
India was hospitable to the Moghuls they came and stayed to rule, they were hospitable to invaders from the middle east and they stayed and preached their religions and when east india company came they welcomed them and they stayed on .. to exploit. so it is alright for the locals to have a little jaundiced eye towards you.. Are you there to take and exploit? ask yourself.. ah enough of philosophising and let me get into my vegetable curry and appams..
