Best mobile phone carrier for short term stay & roaming?

by Russell_and_Julie

Hello Everyone!

We will be in India for about 3 weeks in early February, spending time in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, and Bangalore.

During this time, we would like to have a mobile phone, and are planning on purchasing a pre-paid SIM and/or a phone when we first arrive in Delhi.

Can anyone recommend a mobile carrier that allows national roaming (while we are in Delhi / Agra / Jaipur / Goa) but also has good local coverage in Bangalore? Our phone will get most of its use while we stay in Bangalore, so it is the most important city for us in terms of good coverage.

Many Thanks!

Russell & Julie

buy a HUTCH pre paid sim card and when you buy it get the roaming activated...hutch is the leading network provider in india and next secong best is airtel....what happens generally is whichever city u would travel there are different network providrs that have tie up with hutch...if you do buy a hutch card....and once when you reach goa just ativate or choose bpl provider since incoming is free and you wont be charged

Hi Russel and Julie....
My name is Girish....from bangalore...how u doin ?
I would like to differ from the advice that has been given to u just a little bit...cos i think in terms of ceoverage in india...airtel has the most coverage. so, getting an Airtel Pre-Paid card would do. Usually a pre-paid card if taken in bangalore...is by default activated for national roaming. So i guess if u buy a prepaid from delhi as well..the same terms would apply..but u should go and buy the prepaid card from the Airtel Showroom...cos that way u can ask them all these questions and they would be able to guide u. But recieveing and making calls while in roaming can be way too expensive at times...so be wary of that !
if u wanna avoid that, then its better to pick up a prepaid card in delhi...use it..maybe make it roaming while in goa etc...and then when u come to bangalore...take another prepaid card here..it is a very easy process. Since u say that u will make most use of ur sim in bangalore, its better to buy a local pre-paid sim here..cos if u use ur delhi roaming sim...it could end up being really expensive for u !

Well i too recomond u to buy Airtell SIM as it is most liking SIM of India n u can also go for BSNL which have highest number of towers in India, but it is very very tuff to get the BSNL SIM n it is costly too,but if u know an bondy working in BSNL then u can get it some what easily but it will remain costly

Travel Tips for Bangalore

Bangalore has real-good...

by harishn

Bangalore has real-good food
joints and the host of variety supported here is marvellous. Its
definetly unlike Delhi (where I've been for 7 years) and Mumbai (where
I've been on-off for past 6 years), where for good quality food (as
mentioned by Suhas) costs a 'real-good' amount. Further more, the
culture of 'home-delivery' is very sound in Bnagalore alone. Delhi and
Mumbai are still trying to catch up with it. Chennai is way out of
race.. probably not competing at all.. Further more, the modes of
payment supported by joints in Bangalore is again fabulous.

Getting back to the taste and preparations provided by joints in
Bangalore, I'd rather list the eateries in Bangalore rather than argue
in words (Please note that I'm not mentioning the eateries which I
feel are not offerring good quality stuff as I've visited all these
places atleast once), and am sure there are many more :

1) North Indian food :

High order (Rs 400 and above for 2) : Tandoor (MG Road),
Parivar(Residency Road), BayLeaf (Koramangala), Angithi (Museum Inn),
Ramanshree California's Dhaba (Dodballapur Road), The restaurant in
Atria hotel (forgot the name)
Mid order (Rs 200 and above for 2) : Aangan (Lady Curzon Rd), Tava
(Wheeler Road), Queens (Church St), Golconda Chimney (Airport Road),
Ramana's (Cunningham Road), Aatithya (Ashraya Hotel)
Low order (Rs. 100 and above for 2) : Lalita's Parantha point (Amazing
paranthas and host of North Indian food, Com St), Lalita's Food
Hut(Domlur), Sharma's Punjabi Dhaba (Koramangala), Richie Rich (Frazer
Town), Regency (Kammanahalli)

North Indian Food with South Indian touch : All *sagars, Sai Garden
(Koramangala), Woody's (Com St)
Keep away from : Sigri and Dhanush :) The taste probably savoures the
NRIs..

2) South Indian (am talking of what a North Indian might like) :) :

High order : Woody's and probably other 5* offerrings.. (In Delhi, it
would have been Vaigai where you get 2 Idlis for 75 bucks)
Mid order : Woody's standing section, *sagars, Bheemas, Amravathi,
Nagarjuna, Eden Park, Shanbagh
Low order : *darshinis, Coffee House (M G Road)

3) Indian-Chinese Food :

High order : Rice Bowl (Lavelle Road), Lemon Grass
Mid order : Chung's, Chung Wah, Ginza, Mandarin
Low order : Delicacy (Cox Town)

4) Chinese-Chinese Food :

High order : Mainland China, Memories of China, Bamboo Shoots (Museum
Inn)
Mid order : De Noble House (Highly recommended for Chinese and Thai
food, Branch of Berco's in Delhi)
Low order : (I dunno)

5) Tex-Mex Food :

High order : Bangalore Bistro (Cunningham Road), Latino's (Lady Curzon
Road), Orange County (There's Richard, the Guitarist, who'll be happy
to sing/play a song for you)
Mid order : (I dunno)
Low order : (I dunno)

6) North-Indian Junk Food (Chaats etc) :

High order : (I dunno, probably go to Taj and order a Bhel Puri, if
they serve it!)
Mid order : Kanti Sweets (Brigade Road ext), Tewari's, Gangotri
(Koramangala)
Low order : *sagars

7) Sweets Shop :

High order : Kanti Sweets, Shri Sweets (Koramangala), Anand and
Bhagatram (Com St)
Mid order : *Aggarwal Sweets
Low order : *sagars

8) Bakeries :

High order : Taj Cake Shop
Mid order : Sweet Chariots, Food World, Hot Breads, Melting Moments (M
G Road), Butter Sponge (M G Road)
Low order : (I dunno)

9) Pizzas/Burgers/European Continental :

High order : Pizza Hut, The Only Place, Orange County, Bangalore
Bistro, Nilgiri's Cafe (Brigade Road, First floor), Vicky's (Church
St)
Mid order : Pizza Corner, US Pizza, Casa Piccola, Tycoons
Low order : Lakeview (M G Road), Indiana Foods (slightly off Brigade
Road)

Bangalore

In India, Bangalore is known as the Garden City. I can see why. It is a very green city with many parks and grassy areas. Located at a height of 1,000 metre above sea level, the tempreature here is very pleasant. Bangalore is the capital city of Karnataka state.

We were here as part of a tour of Southern India. The trip was arranged by Simon Bazely through his company Choomti. We were incredibly pleased with his oranisation and the running of the tour was smooth from start to finish. I can wholeheartedly recommend his ervices to anyone who is wanting to make arrangements for their India trip in advance.
