Mysore Palaces

by MichaelFalk1969

The best-known palace in Mysore is the Amba Vilas Palace, but it is by far not the only one here. The Wodeyar Maharajas built lots of representative buildings in different architectural styles (Indian, Islamic, Gothic, Neo-Classic) in Mysore, mainly at the turn of the 19th/20th century. These buildings now serve for the most part as municipal buildings, offices, hospitals and hotels. It is easy to do a tour of the major architectural heritage buildings of Mysore by riksha or taxi. A typical itinerary would include

- Jaganmohan Palace (with art gallery)
- Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel
- Green Hotel
- Mysore City Hall
- Clocktower
- City Corporation Offices
- District Commissioner`s Office
- Krishnavajedra Hospital

I recommend to let your tour end at the Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel and have a can of tea in the gorgeous tea-room of this noble hotel - at 70 rupies an affordable pleasure.

Lalitha Mahal Hotel (Mysore)

by MichaelFalk1969

The stunning Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel of Mysore was built as a palace for the entertainment of the Wodeyar Maharaja`s guests, the construction completed in 1921. In Mysore, only the Amba Vilas Palace is larger than Lalitha Mahal. It is now used as a (state-run) hotel. Even if you don`t stay the night here, it is perfectly possible to have a civilized cup of tea here and enjoy the gorgeous interior at a very affordable price.

The Lalitha Mahal Palace is your place in Mysore to hang out for a while and have tea. It was built by the Maharaja of Mysore to host his most important guest, the Viceroy of India.

My favorite part of Mysore is Magic Babu

The Nandi Bull on Chamandi hill is carved from a single stone. If you can walk down from the top of Chamandi hill it only takes about 10 minutes and it is accessible by rode.

The Mysore Palace is the main attraction. You have to check your camera in at the gate for 5 rupees, but you can get it back before you walk around the palace gardens. I left my camera in the vehicle so I only took a palace picture from the gate. There is an interesting enough history of the palace to get the guide. They sell guide books that explain everything at the end of the tour.

Mysore Visit

"The City"

This is called the city of palaces. But only one palace is the major attraction. That is the 'Amma Vilas' palace or commonly called as Mysore Palace. Most of the other palaces have been either converted to Art Galleries or Royal class Hotels.
Even my guide also told me that unless I am very keen with arts and paintings there is no need to go to these palaces. Jaganmohan Palace is one such art gallery and Lalitha Mahal Palace a five star hotel.

Besides palaces, the city has its own culture and traditions. Sandal wood is a speciality here, along with Mysore Silks and the greenery around nearby Cauvery river.

Moving around the city is relatively easy as its very small. But auto drivers do demand more specially from outsiders. Most of the places within the city could be reached within Rs 15 to Rs 20 in an auto.

The best thing would be to book a cab (which may charge anywhere from Rs 6 per kilometer to Rs 9 per kilometer) and go around the places.
