If you are looking for accommodation near Backwaters try Penguin. They have country boats, houseboats and also a nice heritage guesthouse by the waters..

You can talk to Mr. Jose Akarakalam ( owner )
at Tel.(Office): +91 477 2261522, 94470 56830,094959 56830
You can refer my name Justin to get some special offers as we are close associated for a long time.

If its back waters you prefer, then its kumarkom or allepey. There are lots of houseboat companies.
You can come directly and take one, no prior booking is required.
It may cost around 6000/ per couple, food inclusive, per night.
It you want cheaper alternative, then i suggest you stay in allepey, and then take a 2hour or 4hour drive in a houseboat in the backwaters, which gets you a houseboat experience without the heavy costs.
If you want to stay overnight they you have to book one.

I stayed at Hotel Hawah at Kovalam Light House beach. New hotel overlooking the sea with clean rooms. I paid Rs 2500 per night with breakfast in Oct 08.

Travel Tips for Alappuzha

Alleppey and the Backwaters

by Willettsworld

Alappuzha, also more commonly known as Alleppey, is located in southern Kerala, 66km (41 miles) south of Kochi. There's not a great deal to see in the town itself but the main reason for coming here is to see the Backwaters - a labyrinth of interconnected canals, rivers and lakes, which can easily be seen by going to Vembanad Lake, 1km east of the town. The Backwaters are the main tourist destination in Kerala and so attract tourists in great numbers. Tour companies offer the chance to explore them by kettuvallam - a traditional Keralan house boat but you can also explore them, like I did, on an 8 hour tour from Alleppey to Kollam. Another, even cheaper way, is to take a public ferry across Vembanad Lake to Kottayam which offers the chance to visit some nice Syrian churches.
