Alleppey and the Backwaters
Alappuzha, also more commonly known as Alleppey, is located in southern Kerala, 66km (41 miles) south of Kochi. There's not a great deal to see in the town itself but the main reason for coming here is to see the Backwaters - a labyrinth of interconnected canals, rivers and lakes, which can easily be seen by going to Vembanad Lake, 1km east of the town. The Backwaters are the main tourist destination in Kerala and so attract tourists in great numbers. Tour companies offer the chance to explore them by kettuvallam - a traditional Keralan house boat but you can also explore them, like I did, on an 8 hour tour from Alleppey to Kollam. Another, even cheaper way, is to take a public ferry across Vembanad Lake to Kottayam which offers the chance to visit some nice Syrian churches.
