Natural abode: Local hospitality
Any traveler will tell that nothing beats the experience of staying in a place with a native person. The insight and hospitality that one will experience will be amazing. We were fortunate enough to stay at an acquintance's house for 2 days and be treated with amazing culinary delights.

Costa Malabari: Pleasant homestay, excellent food, great beach
We spent two very pleasant days in the relaxed atmosphere of Costa Malabari. This is a homestay on the coast, in a village near Kannur; it is beautifully situated on a cliff overlooking a picturesque bay. It's a 1 minute descent to a beautiful, quiet, semi-private sandy beach with coconut palms. Swimming there is very good, and there are nice walks through the village and along the beach to the next bay, and the bay after next, and so on...
You can sit in the shaded yard of Costa Malabari on the cliff's edge, read a good book, watch the tide come in, see the fishermen's boats far out at sea, and enjoy a perfect sunset.
The landlord, Mr. Kuryen, is very kind and helpful, and speaks perfect English. He is very knowledgeable about the Theyyam rituals in the greater Kannur area. The cook is excellent, every meal he prepares is a gourmet experience.
The rooms are rather basic but spacious and clean. There were 3 ceiling fans in our room. The only sound at night was the sound of the waves hitting the shore.

Hotel Royal Omars: Cheap quality accomodation in the center
There aren't a lot of accommodation possibilities in this tourist-free but friendly city. There are a few 3-star hotels in the vicinity of the railway station but most of them are often fully booked, so advance reservation is not a bad idea.
Hotel Royal Omars is a 3-star place 500m from the railway station. We didn't have a reservation so we had to take one of their standard double rooms (all the others were reserved) for 640.- Rs+appl. tax. A rich buffet-breakfast was included in the room price.
Though, as a standard room it didn't have A/C, otherwise it was of tremendous value for this little amount of money. The room (and bathroom with flush toilet) was surprisingly clean, there's daily room cleaning service, laundry service, room service, large TV with a lot of channels. The restaurant of the hotel is also good, food is delicious and reasonably-priced.
The only drawback is that the hotel doesn't have a bar and no alcohol is available in the restaurant. (I was given the explanation that it is because the owner of the hotel is a Muslim.) If you feel like you can't do without your usual evening beer, the polite and attending staff will arrange it for you (of course, some tip is highly appreciated).
