Backwaters houseboat: The best hotel is on the water

Pick up a houseboat and drift through the backwaters, surrounded by beautiful birds, lush coconut trees and some of the friendliest people on the planet

This an 'all-in-one' type accomodation. I and my friends had really delicious food, luxurious bedrooms, decent toilets and a great lounging room to enjoy it all....

Also, choose a "green" boat that doesn't dump raw sewage into this precious resource.

KTDC Waterscapes Resort, Kottayam, Kerala: Well kept secret

One of the best kept secrets in kumarakom, at half the cost of the nieghbouring luxuxry hotels and yet offerring the sam e level of accomodations. A very nicely built government kerala tourism dept resort with a nice spa. Excellent location and the lake facing stilt cottages are to die for. The free form pool overlooking the lake is lovely. Great landscaped grounds. hammocks under each cottage.
The service is sad, but all in all nice to stay in.

Jeevans House: Kovalam

We had a pleasant stay, clean basic rooms but very, very hot, even though we were virtually on the beach. A plus side to Jeevans house was that it had a small pool. I usually don't use swimming pools & with the sea being so close an all, but i think Kerala is the most humid place i have ever been. The service was good, i think the bed was changed every other day. It was always full of sand anyway. The downfall to staying so close to the beach is that all the beggars pass there all day!!! Even, especially at breakfast time.

Travancore Heritage: Traditional architecture with great comfort

The Travancore Heritage is a sea side resort in 15 acres of lush green coconut garden and landscaped environs located at Chowara - south of Kovalam, near Trivandrum, Kerala.

The courtyard within the 'Nalukettu' in its center, around which the four wings of the house were built in timber, bring in the air, sunlight and the rain water right into the house making the inhabitants live in tune with Mother Nature. Travancore Heritage comprises of many such houses built at various periods in the past 60 - 100 years from several locations in Travancore, rebuilt at the site after being dismantled and transported with utmost care, with all their architectural grandeur with fine woodcarvings on the rafters, gables and the connecting timber members on the walls intact.

The resort stands on a high cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea and a long wide beach of powdery white sand. The Travancore Heritage is conceived and developed as a Heritage Property to bring to life the age-old traditional architectural splendor of the region with its typical timber houses and 'Nalukettus' with tiled roofing, which allow for living in communion with all the elements of Nature.

Presidency Hotel: Handy to the Train Station

The reception foyer was spacious, plenty of chairs to read the paper and order coffee. The hotel rooms are large, well furnished and comfortable. A comfortable but unmemorable stay.

There is nothing to distinguish this hotel. It has a pool, is handy to the train and the commercial area of Ernakulum.

Aquaserene: Chillout on the Backwater

After 3 hours meandering along the backwaters, I was met by my driver, expecting to be driven to the Taj Retreat. An hours drive later we pulled up at the Aqua. The greeting was friendly and laidback and I quickly decided that my 2 nights here were going to be very relaxing. The room was extremely comfortable, the TV picked up the cricket from Australia ( India was touring Australia) and the fridge had been filled.
All meals were buffet style and of a high standard. The food was almost exclusively Indian, but then, I was travelling in India. The guests were a mix of Indian professionals from Bangalore, and Europeans who , like me were meant to be staying elsewhere. The pool and its furniture was shabby, but to me it didn't really matter. The locale was stunning.

At the suggestion of guests in the neighboring bungalow, I had my first experience of ayervedic massage. At 1000 Rp it was fairly expensive. I have had this type of massage several times since, and this will always be the benchmark. If you expect lots of activities, this is not the place for you. If you want to rest, eat well, laze around in the middle of some of the prettiest scenery around, give this place a try.

Poovar Island Resort: Paradise it is...

I would recommend this hotel to all those nature lovers and Ayurvedic massage seekers...
First think this resort is in an island....surrounded with coconut plantations and its green. As kerala has monsoon climate its an ideal climate for any kind of vegetation. So you will see all kind of flora here. This resort is just made where the river meets the sea... so you can imagine the view....
The resort got a swimming pool with an bar..so u can relax and have a good time. The island got an Ayurvedic massage village and believe me its worth it. I cannot talk about it coz they have different kind of massages for different kinds of problems. They even make you a diet plan and the kitchen does it for you.
They have backwater rides around the island and you can see a different world.
They have free yoga classes in the morning....and now the best part...the rooms... they have floating cottages on the river so you can imagine that...the one i had was a land cottage... did'nt know if i would get sick coz of the movement...

The room i stayed in had a jacuzzi in the room....wow!!! and one side of the bathroom was glass and had plants. But the roof was so high that you don't have anyone peeping in... well its worth a look...i have posted the pic on the site...
The view is the best....plants...the river..sea...
