by Boyabouttown

Looking for advice on decent hotels in the MG Road area of Kochi nr shops and malls.

Re: Good hotels in MG Road area

by hb_capri

Hi.the hotel you choose would really depend on ur budget.I think the Avenue Regent,Abad Plaza and Harbour View are some good ones on MG Road.

P.S - Cochin is a really small place.you dont really have to stay on MG road to be close to the shopping areas

Travel Tips for Kochi

Nuance in the English Language

by cochinjew

A recent survery conducted revealed the division between belief that one speaks the language and the actual ability to communicate the language. While close to 25 per cent of the Indians felt that they spoke English, only 5% could actually speak English, the other 20 per cent could barely communicate. You would find that while making new friends, especially uninvited ones, in Cochin. The nuances of the English Language are lost on them. One cannot blame them, after all they might speak Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi and English is a late comer to their language treasury.
I saw this poster in Kalvathy road on my recent stay in Cochin. Advertising a comfortable stay in air conditioned comfort, they showed a caricature of christ in all the full gory of having been crucified recently.
Malayalam speakers are right to say, we dont understand them, either!

Known for its Kerala food

by bungi333 about Ceylon Bake House

I haven't been to this restaurant, but this was the place my brother wanted to take us first. Since it was shut, we ended up in Grand Pavilion. Hence, this is my brother's review.

He says that they serve even better food than Grand Pavilion. Their flavours are better. And they serve it at nearly half the price compared to Grand. I would recommend the same things i tried at Grand. Karimeen Polichadhu, appam, idiappam, fish molee and shrimps.

St. Francis Church

by SirRichard

The oldest european church in India, was built in 1503 by Portugeese Franciscan friars. Restored in 1779 by the protestant Dutch, made Anglican church by the british in 1795 and now used by the church of south India. Vasco Da Gama's was buried in 1524 here and later moved to Lisbon, but the tomb is still here.

Munnar

by Skibbe

I booked an overnight trip through my hotel to the backwaters and Munnar. This city is a hill station and is known for its tea plantations. The scenery is terrific and the cooler temps are a nice relief from Cochin. There are a few sites to see there but mostly it is nice just to drive around the hills.

I had a great driver through the Old Courtyard Hotel--he was smart, funny, and friendly. I think his name was Mano.

Backwater trip for three hours

by cochinjew

Por supuesto, you come all this way to Cochin and dont go on a Backwaters tour? Suresh will arrange for a pick up at the hotel and then one hour later, at Vaikom you board boats, in our case a small boat with just one oarsman and one guide and just two chairs
Emerging from the canal into the river Ita, 35ft at times , the canopy of the greenery with gentle reminders of the people who live in this area.. living here rather than intruding like we do. A cornucopia of botany.. i could recognize, palm trees from Borneo, Cacao from mexico, wild flowers of New Guinea, some australian visitors like myself ( Banksia) and oodles of coconut trees...
