After a very bad experience with Fort Heritage, I found by chance the RainTree Lodge, located in the heart of Fort Kochin. Great place, incredibly friendly and helpful staff, only 5 rooms, large, decorated with excellent taste and equipped of silent AC. The roof terrasse is a must. Excellent value for money.
I found Raintree Lodge quite by accident while looking through the internet for somewhere to stay in Cochin. It was a delightful surprise to find that the rooms at Raintree Lodge and our host Edgar Pinto far exceeded my expectations.
The rooms at Raintree were tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The view from the roof terrace was lovely and a great spot to unwind. Raintree Lodge is well situated to all the sites in and around Fort Cochin. A perfect base from which to explore Fort Cochin and Kerela.
Edgar was an angel - nothing was too much trouble. He organised our backwater tour on a traditional houseboat for an overnight stay which was one of the many highlights of our holiday in Kerela. He was a great source of local knowledge on a myriad of subjects - from where we could have an ayurvedic treatment, to a good cooking class or a shop to buy sarees to where to eat out depending on the occasion and what we wanted to spend. All his recommendations were first class - not a dodgy one among them.
I met up with friends from Ireland who were traveling through Southern India at Raintree Lodge. They thought that Raintree Lodge was without a doubt the best place they stayed in India and promptly changed their travel plans to linger in peaceful Kerela for the rest of their Indian experience.
I highly recommend Raintree Lodge at Fort Cochin.
We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Raintree Lodge in Fort Cochin and we were delighted with our choice. Firstly, the location of the house is ideal for visiting the Fort Cochin area and also it is a short autorickshaw ride from Matancherry and the antique shops of Jew Town. As mentioned in many other reviews of Raintree Lodge, Edgar Pinto (the owner) is a font of information and together with his staff, they seemed able to respond to any request or requirement that we had. Nothing was impossible. For those who are looking to use this accommodation as a base for local trips, you will find that Edgar will be able to suggest and arrange visits and tours at excellent rates.
The house itself is quaint and the rooms are very clean representing great value for money. We understand that Edgar is near to completing an exclusive resort comprising 13 rooms down the road from Raintree and it sounds like it will be one of the signature hotels in Fort Cochin for many years to come.
We will certainly be looking up Edgar on our next visit to Cochin.
This is a hotel built 200 years ago and completely recosntructed respecting the original design.
Exquisit and elegant furniture, great service and food, excellent live Indian Music at night.
Highly recommended.
Very welcoming and friendly staff. when we arrived at the hotel at 6am we were greeted by staff who put garlands of flowers around our heads. extremely friendly and helpful staff. Hotel can arrange airport pickups. the hotel has a Rooftop restaurant serving local dishes- yum!
The kappithan inn is a small but very friendyl home stay or guest house as we know them for around 700rupees a night with air con its very cosy and homely and clean It will also provide breakfast and evening meals on request but as there are so many restaurants in fort cochin you will want to eat out every night the kapithann inn is a 5 minute walk from the harbour and the chinese fishing nets so is idealy located for all your requirements
Situated on one of the streets of Fort Cochin, Sithara Homestay caters to the taste and needs of the discerning tourists. Present on a street studded with numerous ancient buildings conjuring up an aura of yore. An ideal place to start your discovery of the place and to plan and explore the beauty of Kerala. Fort Cochin is one of the sections of Cochin (The industrial Capital of Kerala), tucked between the Arabian Sea & the backwaters. Situated on a peninsula in the west linked by a complex system of ferries and unimaginatively made bridges, Fort Cochin shares the western location with Mattancherry as its other geographical ally of the old districts, while the eastern part is occupied by modern Ernakulam.
The people who live there is Mr.Harry John Bernard & Mrs. Mary John Bernard. really calm and serene place to stay , very near to the Beach. Really cool bunglow
The lady of the House is an amazing , really marvelous cook, every one going to India , should visit Cochin and check out Sithara homestay .
www.sitharahomestay.com Amazing food , mind blowing, High quality rooms , affordable prices, in the center , and near the beach
The Fort House Hotel has started a ayurvedic center under the technical guidance of the Nagarjuna ayurvedic group.I must also mention that the Nagarjuna group is the most reputed health care group of Kerala. I think the doctor is there at the hotel continuously. The pleasant ambience of the hotel and their delicious vegetarian meals can only compliment a rejuvenation or cleansing treatment.I think it would be a great idea to combine the treatment with a relaxing holiday in Fort Cochin!!
www.hotelforthouse.com Good Ayurvedic Spa
Fort Cochin is a charming peninsula harbour town with a beautiful mixture of indian and portuguese buildings. It's famous for its chinese fishing nets, but has more to offer. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle of the main land town and still have lots of hotels and restaurants to choose from
Both you and the crows can have a go at the fresh fish they sell and prepare down by the harbour :-)
We've stayed at Fort Heritage twice and have been very pleased. It is in the more expensive end of the line, but nice rooms and welcoming staff. It was built as a dutch palace some 400 years ago and has been a heritage hotel for appx 50 years now.

Does anyone know if you can hire a taxi to take you to Kanyakumari, how long would it take and roughly how much. Can you go in the morning and return that night or do you need to spend a night.
You might find some answers on this website:
http://www.touristplacesinindia.com/kanyakumari/transportation.html
You would have to spend the night. A much better option would
be the train. The road from Kochi to Trivandrum is very narrow,
extremely busy and it would take for ever to get there by car...
Thanks for the advise. I will look into booking a train ticket from Fort Cochin and back.
Many trains are available to reach Kanyakumari. Taxis charges would be more than 5000 INR, Where train charge is less than 100 INR
No need to book the ticket. It is always available. If you like to visit all the places around Kanniyakumari, then hire one taxi in local. I am from Kanniyakumari working as a Lecturer in Oman. Thanks
You can not return on the very same day. One night stay is recommended.
Train would be a better option. To travel from Fort Kochi, you'll have to board train at Erankulam Junction. And if you do not find any train to Kanyakumari, you can either travel up to Nagercoil or Trivandrum. There should be a number of trains from Ernakulam to Trivandrum. Kanyakumari is about an hour or so from Trivandrum.
Advance booking of train ticket is recommended. Check irctc.co.in. Station codes are:
Ernakulam - ERSS
Trivandrum Central - TVC
Nagercoil Junction - NCJ
Overnight stay is recommended.
Thank you for your advise I think I will take a night train and return the next day.
Any recommendations for good, comfortable, well-located budget hotels/homestays in Munnar or Fort Cochin?
Has anyone been to the Kanan Devan Hills Club in Munnar, or Vasco Homestay/Princess Inn in Fort Cochin? These are my current best bets, from the guidebooks. What are they like?
Thanks!
I highly recommend Ballard Bungalows in Fort Cochin. please look at their website, historical and incredibly friendly staffa and manager, mr densal sany
you can write to him directly if you like or call him
You can choose the accommodation depends upon your budget. I am bit sceptical about homestays if you can stay in a hotel with the same price it is recommendable.
Value should be compared with the money you are spending on it

I couldnt agree more with the above post. Why Homestay in Kerala when there are hotels at the same price and with all the social conveniences and more infrastructure?
Try travelguru.com they always advertise the best range of hotels in all budgets. We have booked rooms for our guests through them and are satisfied. makemytrip.com is also helpful but for hotels travelguru probably offers a wider budget range. If you are travelling alone, hotels may be a safer option than home stays. Im not saying that home stays are not safe, but hotels would definitely be better for the single traveller. Best wishes.
Try the Hotel Fort House. Its a very simple, clean and rustic place. Check out their website www.hotelforthouse.com
Hi-we only have a few hours in port and someone kindly suggested we hire a taxi to sight see ? What and where do you think we should see and do -and how long from the port do you think it will take ?Thanks for your help
you can email sunil or suresh at info@indiatouristland.com and ask them to arrange a taxi for the duration of your stay. The Cruise ships come right up to the town so the distance is not a problem, you should take the taxi to fort cochin and see the sights there.. look at various VT pages of Cochin for information.
