Any Villas or Apartments for rent?

by ayjes

Greetings to all,

I have been many times to India in the past but this will be my first time to Cochin. I am bringing my mother with me for a relaxing yet culture filled holiday. I am looking to rent a villa, house or apartment in Cochin for the entire month of Novemeber 2006. Is there a company that deals with such inquires for this area? Has anyone stayed in a place they could recommend?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Ayjes

Travel Tips for Kochi

Light weight travel

by suvanki

Travel light....it can be hot and humid! Even a light bag will feel heavy!
A day sack for carrying camera , water, sunscreen etc Loose light weight clothing
Slip on shoes for doing the sights....Jewish synagogue, Dutch palace etc, you need to remove your shoes before entering, but if using the ferries, beware that you sometimes have to jump between the gang plank and deck, so you don't want to lose a slip on/flip flop overboard! Plenty of pharmacies etc in Ernakulam, but pack essential medications etc.
Rehydration salts, immodium , toilet paper, wipes - 'just in case'

sun protection essential Plenty of film, batteries, memory cards etc.- Carry as much as You can- It's a photographers paradise! Sun protection, shades/ hat/ cover up especially when travelling on the ferries. Loose coins for the snake charmers/ beggars / church/ synagogue donations etc.

wet wipes/antiseptic hand gel/ tissues, as restaurants don't always have soap/towels

binoculars for spotting dolphins.

toilet paper/tissues - not always available in restaurants/toilets etc.

Bottled water- easy to get dehydrated whilst wandering between the sights!

Party Orders Undertaken.. that deadly?

by cochinjew about Hotel Saravana Bhavan

It is on your way from Cochin to Munnar. a good place to stop for Breakfast. the name of the town is Peruvamboor and I cant find it on VT. It is a vegetarian restaurant, with modicum of ambience and reasonable service
Party orders undertaken.. is the sign on the front of the hotel.. I find the indian use of english language delightful, something other english speakers in their analytic advance in the world had forgotten Uthappam was tasty

Fish ?

by cadzand

.... some of these fish have been fished by those famous fishing nets. The major part of the fish at this stall has been fished in the wide open sea though. A wide variety of fresh fish, crab, gambas, shrimps, etc. Yummie !!!

Chinese Fishing Nets

by Willettsworld

First erected between 1350 and 1450, these cantilevered fishing nets indicate trade links with China. Known as Cheena vala they are fixed to the land with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.

I got called over to one by 5 guys who were working on it and they showed me some of the small fish they had caught with names like toad fish and pen fish. I then helped them by pulling up the net which they say they do between 250 and 350 times a day! You'll get some lovely photos of them at sunset if you stand at the far end of the line of them so that you can see the sun setting over them in the distance (see next tip).

Ethnic Passage, Jew Town Cafe BookStore

by cochinjew

This cafe/bookstore/antique store is situated just opposite to the Synagogue at the end of the Jew Town Lane. I have never seen such a good collection of Kerala Antiques anywhere. I wish i had a house large enough to accomodate these!
the best thing about the place is the owner, Mr R , who is very seldom seen there since his offices are elsewhere. You can have coffee and or light snacks and then there is the bookstore to browse through. He invited me for coffee and then gave me a gift of a book on the Jews of Kerala, one written by a local historian, rather than the foreigners coming and writing about it .(I am also guilty of this)
