Ocean delight

by cheeksy about Samudra Tara

It is situated on Kovalam beach, right next to the light house. Such a nice place. And the name suits it. Samundar means ocean in sankrit. We stayed in a room for 2 people just for 300 Rs a night. The who was working there - I believe his name was CJ - was the most humble and nicest person I have ever seen.
The inn aka guest house is located right next to the ocean and it takes you about 3-5 mins to get to all the restaurants and cafes by the seaside. Sea food is amazing and not expensive. If you walk out of the gate and instead of turning left, turn right, you can go down the village and find there shops and markets. If you want cheap traditional food - it is the place for you to go.
You can also rent bikes and cars. Just ask CJ and he will help you out. Coconut trees surround the inn. And you can see the ocean from the upper floor. It is really clean and nice there.
To get there you need to get first to Trivandrum train station and then hire a cab. It should cost you around 200-250Rs for the whole cab. You could try rickshaw - probably around 100 but there were 4 of us so we just took a cab. Just tell them Kovalam beach, Light House. They will take you there.

Swaying Palms, Beautiful Beaches

by wrldtravler about Le Meridien Kovalam Beach Resort

I always try and make it down to Kovalam whenever I'm in India and one of my favorite place to stay at is the le Meridien Beach Resort.
It's the old Maharaja's Summer Retreat, they have their own private beach and the famous light house beach of Kovalam is right next to the hotel. It's on a cliff and the views are just spectacular.
http://www.lemeridien.com/india/kovalam/hotel_in1815.shtml The Hotel has its own private beach and some world class facilities. It has recently been bought over by the Le Meridien group (i haven't been since, but my parents absolutely loved it) and this has been a real boost for the quality of the staff and the service.
From Kovalam you can make day-trips to the Back water Canals of Allepey. You can also go down to the tip of the Indian Sub-Continent, KanyaKumari.

Kovalam beach in kerala

by allForEver

The European guests of the then Travancore kingdom discovered the potentiality of Kovalam beach as a tourist destination in the 1930s. But the real fame as an ideal beach resort was won later for the Kovalam beach in the early Seventies with arrivals of the masses of 'Hippys'. It was a debut of the transformation of just a casual fishing village of Kerala into one of the most important tourist destinations in the world- the Kovalam beach. Now some foreign companies are bringing chartered tourists in a large number to Kovalam beach apart from the usual travellers, most of them are repeating travellers.

Kovalam Beach

"Beautiful Beach"

Kovalam Beach is a great place to spend a few days relaxing after some hard weeks of traveling! There lots of fresh fruit & seafood available

"Local Fisherman"

The local fisherman are very friendly. Not much English though so i tried a few phrases in Malaylam.

"Kovalam Sunsets"

Being on the West Coast of India Kovalam gets spectacular sunsets. I enjoyed watching the sun melt into the sea each evening!

RE: holiday at the Leela hotel

by ajayzener

It depends on what kind of a holiday you are looking for. Leela is in Kovalam, 15 Km from the main city. The main attraction is the Kovalam Beach. You can also visit other beaches like Veli ( 20 Km from Kovalam)you can see the lake flowing into the arabian sea here. You can make a visit to the city and see the temples, the Sree Chitra Art Museum, the Padmanabha Palace..and other monuments across the city. You can also take a day or two out to go to the Ponmudi Hill Resort ( 50 Km ) from Trivandrum City. Or you can also take a days trip to Kanya Kumari - 60 Km from Trivandrum City.

Do let me know what is the knid of holiday you are looking for.

Jabs and malaria

by oxfordlad

I am going to Kovalam in January does anyone know what jabs I will need and if I should take malaria tablets?

Re: Jabs and malaria

by obiwanwasabe

Hiya, Malaria tablets are advisable and your decision, do not take any other advice from anywhere exept from qualified physicians, regarding any other jabs,or go see the nurse at your local GP surgery. they really are the only people qualified to advise on this, sometimes they will not advise and you should then check with W.H.O. recommendations.

Am I right to assume that you are from Oxford.
If this is right, all you need to do is go to your nearest Boots chemist.
There, they will sort you out with any medication that you may require.
It will also be cheaper than going to your GP.

Re: Jabs and malaria

by DebBowers

Hi,I am going to Kovalam in Feb with my husband and we went to our GP's to have our booster jabs yesterday for Typhoid, we are ok for Hepatitus A which was recommended. We discussed the necessity for a course of malaria tablets with the nurse and after reading through the latest health info she said it wasn't nnecessary for the area of Kerala. Unless we hear anything different up to a week before we go we shan't bother to take them. We will be taking plenty of 50% Deet spray and are even thinking about buying a good mosquito net before we go. Really not sure how much of a mossie problem there will be that time of year but there is also the concern about Chikungunya Fever which is caught from infected mosquitos so our thinking is better safe than sorry.

Re: Jabs and malaria

by calendula

I just spent a wonderful time in Kerala, Jan 24- March 2008, Kovalam Beach and Trivandrum, the back waters near Kottayam and up to Kumily. Did not have any inoculations nor did I take malaria pills. No worries, I was told there has not been a case of malaria in Kerala in 10 years
