Beach front place
by bungi333
Although we didn't stay there, this place would be my choice for staying when i visit Kovalam next time. It is right on the beach with great view. If i remember correctly, i think it even has a swimming pool (not sure about that). The shacks are right outside this place. This is perfect for just lazing about on the beach and to get back and chilling out in your room.
Unique Quality: Amazing view of the sea and beach.
Directions: It is right on the beach.

Coconut: Uses of......Copra and water
by suvanki
Copra is the dried oil yielding kernal of the coconut, which provides the oil that is used in cosmetics, soaps, moisturisers, conditioners and for culinary purposes.
Some vendors on Kovalam beach sell bottles of coconut oil as a sun lotion! Beware, you'll fry and burn!
Coconut water is found in drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) coconut milk, and a form of vinegar!
In many of the bars around Lighthouse Beach in Kovalam, coconut based cocktails are popular, served with a straw and the coconut!
Kovalam Beach
by ieee
This beach is world famous and for a reason! There will be a lot of people around and if you are someone like me who does not mind the bustle around you, then u will enjoy the serene beach and the beautiful sunsets.
We drove from the city of Trivandrum, stopping on the way to see what I thought was a coconut plantation but happens to be just the birds eye view of a small town with each house having several coconut trees.
Varkala beach
by mantru
Most travellers spend some time at the popular Kovalam beach, south of Thiruvanathapuram.
Varkala, north of the state's capital, is less easily reachable, but always worth that extra effort. High red rocks, coconut trees, unspoiled sea with good waves, retaurants, one holy hindubeach and that is the wonderful sight of the Arabian Sea coastline.

Does anybody know Pappukutty Beach Resort?
by soleil40
We'll be in Kovalam on Feb 7th and I have made a beach cottage reservation in Pappukutty Beach Resort. Does anyone know this place? I only booked for 2 nights to check the area and eventually get something better... We are looking for a typical beach cottage in Kovalam or Varkala. I've heard of Kerala Bamboo House but no web site...Any advice would be welcome...
Thanks to everybody and happy new year!!!!

Hiya,
I remember this place (pappakutty) just off the beach. But don't be fooled by its location as nearly all the hotels are "just off the beach", it looked (if I remember right) like one of the standard 2* hotels thet all seemed to be crammed in behind the beach shacks but should do you ok till you can find what you are looking for.

You will get good bamboo house, treetops in Kodanadu near Malayattoor a famous pilgrim centre in Kerala, the place is in Ernakulam dist. The site is just inaugurated, its famous for elephant taming, you can spend a day with elephants there.
Happy New Year

Sorry for a late reply
Kovalam is 14km away from Thiruvanathapuram, From Thiruvanathapram you have to come around 216kms to Ernakulam, from there its 30km to Kodanadu.
All this route covers a lot of tourist places.
At a stretch it will take around 6-7 hrs.
Thank You.

Any tips as to where to shop in and around Kovalam.
Re: Shopping
by suvanki
Hi, What kind of things are you wanting to shop for in Kovalam? Anything in particular?
When I was there in 2003, there were lots of shops selling crafts, tailors who'll make up clothing for you,cd's, books, spices etc. On the beach you'll come across traders selling fruit, lunghis/sarongs, sunglasses etc. You can also buy fish from the local fishermen.
Trivandrum offers a wider choice, and possibly cheaper prices.
Haggle, Haggle and Haggle!
There are plenty of tips(including shopping) in VTers Kovalam and Kerala pages.

The Kovalam beach front and the side streets were very crowded with all kinds of shops catering to all kinds of needs of the tourist.
If you want to purchase regional items from Kerala, I would encourage you to shop at governement sponsored shops in Trivandrum which is not very far.
Caution - if a particular item strikes your fancy and you just have to have it, then buy it after bargaining very hard. I regret not paying the price for some dance masks because I simply ran out of time for shopping -:(
Have fun

There are lots of beach front shops but you must haggle! Remember, there are lots of shop keepers and they want your custom - so just walk away and they will come after you with a better price.
The government shop in Trivandrum is very good - and with fixed prices.
Good luck with the shopping.
NYE in Kovalam
by wheretonext
Hi there
I will be in Kovalam for New Years Eve. Are there any real safety concerns if two females are out and about on the beach for NYE? Also, is there anywhere to kick on after festivities finish up at the beach at 12:30?
Re: NYE in Kovalam
by SfumatoPants
There are the usual stories about GHB and assault. I don't know how common these incidences really are, but I would advise being careful. Kovalam is a party destination for tourists and young Indians alike, almost a kind of "Spring Break", where the men far outnumber the women.
I'm sure you can always find a party if you are determined.
Re: NYE in Kovalam

Kovalam beach is not what it used to be. Too many tourists, too less space, too many shopkeepers, too few police personnel. While you may not have real safety concerns there, better to take full precautions, eg., don't venture out alone too far into the beach late at night - even the lighthouse there may not help you then.
Re: NYE in Kovalam
by wheretonext
Thank you both for your responses. In terms of GHB etc. am I safe in assuming that as long as we buy our own drinks and don't leave them lying around, the likelihood of drink spiking is minimal?
Is the beach party organised by specific operators or is it a free for all?
Where can I find information about more 'exclusive' parties that may be organised which is targeted at the 20 - 30 year old market (as opposed to couples/families)?
