Clothing?

by DebBowers

We are off to Kovalam in Feb staying at the Uday Samudra hotel. It is our first time to Kerala and having read a bit about it being disrespectful to go around in the sort of clothing you might wear in say mediterranean resorts I am not really sure what sort of clothing would be appropriate. With temps being high we want to stay cool but also don't want to cause any offence. I am quite happy to wear long trousers/skirts but are strappy sun tops a no-no and also away from the hotel/resort is it ok for men to walk around in shorts? Any advice would be much appreciated. Is it easy enough to find clothing shops to suit western tastes in Trivandrum? Many thanks.

Re: Clothing?

You can wear whatever you like although I wouldn't advise sunbathing topless. The Samudra is out on its own so you shouldn't be bothered at all while there, although there can be bands of youths wandering the beaches. In Kovalam itself you will find all sorts, from hippy-types to "normal" package tourists, it is certainly not exceptional for (foreign) men to be wearing shorts.
I don't really know what you mean by "western tastes" in clothing, naturally enough the sort of things you can buy in both Kovalam and Trivandrum are semi-Indian-styles favoured by Western tourists, e.g. floaty skirts and loose cotton tops, as well as the ubiquitous T-shirts, all of which are fine for the heat. Not the best place for lycra and woolly jumpers, but then presumably you aren't going there to buy things you could get at home: India has fantastic textiles and also tailoring services if you want to buy fabric and have it made up.

Re: Clothing?

Hi! I stayed in Kovalam December 2003 - Jan 04. I found that a lot of the clothing that I normally wear in Greece/ Turkey etc was ok, but found that as it was hot and humid, I ended up buying silk and linen clothing in resort. I had quite a lot of clothes made too.
I'd advise bringing minimal stuff with You, then buying sarongs/ lunghis etc in resort. Before You leave, You'll probably find a lot of the locals asking for your toiletries, old clothing etc.

You'll be ok in strappy tops etc in Kovalam. I'd recommend a one piece rather than bikini if swimming in the sea - the currents can be quite strong.

I found that walking around Trivandrum in 'sensible Bermuda shorts' caused some of our party to be hissed at, with threatening looks - many of the group were middle aged.

Visiting Churches, temples, museums etc You need to have Your arms, shoulders and legs covered, plus You need to remove Your shoes.

Please contact me again if You have any other questions, or check out my Kovalam and Kerala pages for more info about clothing etc.

Happy Travelling,
Sue x

Shorts and strappy suntops are ok in Kovalam, although you do sometimes get groups of young men strolling the beach for a bit of female tourist spotting - but they're harmless! If you travel around away from the beach its probably better to cover up a little - a thin sarong is a great cover-up. If you visit the backwaters sunbathing on the boat is OK, just cover up for any visits ashore.

The temperature in February is high but we have never found it too humid.

Enjoy your trip!

Travel Tips for Kovalam

Alcohol licences

by paul-motley

A liquor licence in Karalla apparently cost a fortune so most establishments do not have them although they still serve alcohol knowing if they are caught they face a few days in goal. Kingfisher lager is usually available and local brand spirits are served which can be a bit potent (they creep up and knock your legs from under you). If you want branded product then go to the Taj Green hotel or for home consumption the liquor store at Kovalam Junction. Wine is sold at most hotels but at a very premium price, hotel drinks are normally listed on the bill as "specials", some of the bars on the front of Lighthouse Beach serve the beer in Teapots to pour into cups.

Fusion

by wrldtravler about Fusion

Perhaps the best in Decor on the beach. The restaurant is located at a height so try and get tables overlooking the beach. The interiors is done up in a very green manner with beautiful illuminated palms serving as props. Fusion Cuisine

The Backwaters (1)

by suvanki

Cruising The Backwaters, something all visitors to Kovalam should experience. There are many ways to experience their delights. Either independently or through an organised tour, whether as a day /evening or night trip or spending a few days/nights on a rented rice boat.

This network of canals, rivers, lakes and islands offers not just a relaxing time drifting through stunning scenery, but also a chance to see village life as the local inhabitants go about their daily lives on and around the waterways.

Kovalam - Best in Moonsoon

by radz

"Moonsoon Kerala"

Kovalam is beach resort, with white sand beaches&and coconut palms.
Its 16km from Trivendram. One of best beaches in Kerala.
Best time to visit September to March, but I would say Moonsoon time is best time now:))

As moonsoon is offseason, you will get good rates at hotels.
I coun't say must see places,as whole beach &and green coconut palms are just to see ,feel&to enjoy:).

On the way to Kovalam is so full of greenery.
