The Elysium Gardens is a hotel that has dormitories, and is ideal for the trip you are planning, in fact they will even put up a nice campfire in the evening when a group stays with them. Do visit my travel page for Munnar, I have put up photos of this property and contact details too! They take reservations on the net and offer a good discount if you talk them into it.:)
Munnar is great place for an excursion, so have fun!

Travel Tips for Munnar

SPEEDBOATING ON MADUPETTY DAM RESERVOIR

by pravdr

speedboating on the tranquil waters of madupetty reservoir is an experience not to be missed.
when we reached the boating station it was 2.30pm in afternoon after much contemplation about the hot sun we decided to give it a try.
surprisingly the temperature over the waters was cool and the gentle breeze was doing its work well to soothe our souls.
we bought tickets and waited as the speedboat came rushing in towards the boat station and suddenly cut off its engine and spun its direction and that allowed it to gently ease towards the shore.
we boarded the speedboat and it took off with a roar towards the far reaches of the lake.
we enjoyed the splashes of the wake created by the speedboat cutting its way thro the waters.
beautiful play of different colors of the bottom shore of th reservoir reflected by the afternoon sun made and awesome sight.
on the far side we could see elephants grazing on the shores of the reservoir.
a few of them were quite close and were wild.see my other tip on the elephants at madupetty. speedboats are run by KTDC and kerala forest dept.
all you have to do is buy tickets don the lifejackets and enjoy the ride.

Tea Capital

by ri2ko

Munnar - The name means 'three rivers' in the local language, Malayalam. Its infact the confluence of three rivers - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala.

You can reach Munnar from three routes - the more popular one from Kochi via Kothamangalam, Adimali and also through the more scenic but relatively less travelled routes from Udumulpet (via Marayur) and Kattapana (via Chinnar, Devikulam). And there is the route from Kodaikkanal which is very scarcely travelled. Infact this route is popular for its absence of tarmac and the hidden dangers.

I dont want to write about the heavenly charm of tea gardens and the romantic climate that complements the entire area. Rather what got me hooked with Munnar is the ghat road.

If you want to master the curves , drive through Munnar. Especially the drive to 'Top Station' and Rajamalai.

The road to Rajamalai from the forest check post is single lane for the major part. To make things more interesting vehicles are adviced not to honk (since it is a wildlife sanctuary) The sharp curves will ensure that you will not spot a vehicle until it is 5 to 10 mts away from you. There is the rare chance of tackling a heavy vehicle in this route. Good Luck......if you are one among those lucky few.

Rajamalai is on the route to Udumulpet from Munnar. Its around 10 Kms from Munnar. Dont forget to buy tea from Nyamakkad tea factory on the way. It has a retail outlet

Top station is 32 Km from Munnar town and it is the highest point in the road to Kodaikkanal. On way you can see mattupetty dam, kundala dam and echo point. The road is pretty good and the drive through the tea gardens (esp after kundala dam ) is very refreshing. You can average around 30 Km in this route.

After driving through all the ghat roads around Munnar, the drive to Kothamangalam via Adimaly is like going through a 6-lane exrpess way.
