by baloog

A good drive is thru Madurai, Pondicherry ( from Pondicherry it's a lovely drive till Chennai through East Coast highway).
You can go straight to Chennai from Madurai which is slightly shorter in distance..

Thank you Mr. Justin, Do you have any idea howmany hours drive to Madurai from Munnar?

Is it national highway ?

Madurai to munnar would be about 2 hrs if you drive non-stop... it's a commercial road connecting Cochin to Munnar.. quite heavy traffic can be expected at times.. you can't miss some breath taking views.. so photo stops will take some time.. drive leisurely.. you will not regret the decision to drive thru that stretch!!

there was a mistake.. the following is the correct information.. The route is

Munnar-Devikulam-Podinaykkanur-Theni (where you come to NH 220, NH 49 NH 45 Intersection) stay on NH49...Pass Andipatti - Usilampatti -Madurai

Total distance is about 140 kms.. approx time 4hrs..

The Munnar - Devikulam - Bodinaykkanur stretch is extremely beautiful.
It's also a very winding and steep gradient (of course, the way down is easier on the vehicle).

A night-time drive is not at all recommended - the route can be quite risky with all the goods carriers coming up from Bodinaykannur in the valley below.

Hi Thank you very much, Definitely will avoid night travel.

By the way, I forgot to add something (and this is important):

If you are travelling during the monsoon (which begins in June), I would suggest that you avoid this route.

The reasons have a lot to do with safety:

1. The initial monsoon rains are very heavy - and it's not uncommon for the rushing water to sweep away whole stretches of this mountain road. On my last trip, over 4 kilometres of road just after Bodimettu was missing. (Bodimettu is the highest point on the route from Munnar to Bodinaykannur... and is after Devikulam.)

2. The extra moisture in the air (high humidity) coupled with the cold climate makes for dangerous driving - during the monsoon, the the mist arrives early and leaves late. Often, visibility in the early morning and early evening is less than 15 metres (around 40 feet) - and that's very risky on a mountain road.

3. In any case, if you are scheduled to be there during the rains, check with the local bus drivers if the roads are alright. Also make sure you travel this route only between 8am and 4.30pm.

Have fun.

Thanks a lot. We are planing the trip in Feb 2009. Hope this time is ok for the journey. Any way we will talk to local drivers for the conditions of the road.

Feb is good time.. not much mist.. ideally leave by around 8 am... leisurely you can stop whereever you like, for great photographs... reach Madurai by lunch time.. then proceed to Chennai...
have a great drive!

Travel Tips for Munnar

Short and easy treks off the main road

by Miharika9

The Munnar region is full of tea estates covering the hills and valleys, which border the main roads leading to various tourist destination. These tea estates have several pathways running through the rows of tea bushes to enable the tea pluckers to do their job. A very pleasant walk can be enjoyed on these 'tea paths' in any estate that is unfenced. Do not climb over fenced areas. When you walk on a tea path, look out for colourful local birds and butterflies that flit in and out. Some tea estates give great views of mountains and valleys, and the air is so fresh and clean. It is possible to climb right up a mountain along a tea path, so look for the opportunity as it is much easier than rock climbing ! Another good easy trek opportunity is to enter the shola forests that sometimes abut the tea estates. If you look carefully, you will find little pathways going in. These jungles are dripping with ferns and orchids and are a delight for any nature lover. Watch out for leeches in warmer seasons. You will usually find small streams and waterfalls inside the shola forest.

Echo Point

Echo Point has a natural echo phenomenon is situated 15 km from Munnar. You can scream as loud and you want and you can hear your echo back. I find it very interesting.

Lots of stall in this are so you can get your fresh coconut juice, food, homemade chocolate and also woodcrafts. We have a very sweet strawberry juice and got some strawberry jam too.
