A Beautiful Disappointment

Our Travel brochure had advertised Aquaserene as a first-class resort, ideal for relaxing after a week of touring. With that in mind, I spent a week up North eagerly anticipating this week in the South.

My disappointment began the moment we arrived. In each of our hotels in the North we were warmly greeted at reception with garlands of flowers and cool drinks. There was nothing of this nature at Aquaserene.

On being shown to our room I stood back in surprise at the damp, musty smell that emanated from the room, which was very sparsely and poorly furnished. The pillows and matresses were badly stained, curtains hanging from windows, electrical sockets hanging from walls etc

I thought "OK, I'll head for the pool", but there I was met with further disappointment. There were just 8 sunbeds to accomodate all guests of the resort, and a couple of these were broken; only some of the others had plastic matresses and if you were unlucky enough to get one of the others you were expected to lie on hard wooden slats.

In the restaurant it was hard to find a cup, plate or glass that wasn't chipped or cracked. The menu (described in the holiday brochure as "delicious and varied local and international cuisine) was very limited and all food was heavily spiced. This did not suit my travelling companion, who dislikes spiced food.

There was no entertainment in the resort, no poolside bar.....in fact, no bar that we could find!

There is one shop in the resort, but it was closed for the duration of our stay. On asking for it to be opened, other guests were told that it was closed.

The resort is very isolated and remote and would suit someone who didn't want to be found for a week!!

On the plus side, the rooms are housed in original heritage cottages (probably explains the musty smell) and the setting and grounds are quite the most beautiful natural setting of any hotel I have ever stayed in.

With the right touches, Aquaserene could be one of the nicest resorts in the world. Sadly, at present, it's not.
