Travel Tips for Thiruvananthapuram
Events & Festivals : Nishagandhi Festival
by ajayzener
Nishagandhi festival is an event organised by the Kerala Tourism department in the first quarter of every year. This event showcases the cultural and art forms of Kerala and some of the other states. The event is for 7 days and this is held in Kanakakunnu Palace (Open Air Auditorium ) in Trivandrum. The museum road is illuminated during the entire festival and there are noted artists performing in the week long event. The event also includes the annual flower show, in the Sooryakanti show grounds.
An event to watch, if one is in Kerala during that time.
Station Porters
by grets
I was absolutely amazed at the ease with which the porters at Trivandrum station carried our heavy suitcases. Throwing them on to their heads as if they were made of feathers and rushing ahead at a pace which we had difficulty in following, these men made light work of getting our luggage to the compartment.

Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple
by grets
By the time we reached this temple I was seriously dehydrated and really didn't do it justice. We'd made the mistake of not changing money at the airport on arrival, and now we couldn't find anywhere to change, so we couldn't buy any water.
The temple dates from 1733 and was contructed in Dravidian style with many later additions. It features a tall gopura gateway and high fortress-like walls.
The legend behind the temple tells the story of how Vishnu, disguised as a beautiful child, fused with a tree in the forest, which then crashed and became a 13km long image of the reclining Vishnu. When a sage complained that he was unable to see the entire image, the temple appeared.
The temple is closed to non Hindus but the area in front of the entrance is quite interesting with souvenir stalls and devotees bathing in a tank.
Temple Visit, Padmanabha Swamy Temple
by ajayzener
Padmanabha Swamy Temple is situated in the heart of trivandrum inside the Fort area. Renovated in 1733 AD by the then ruler of Travancore, Raja Marthanda Varma, the temple is a must see for any tourist visiting Trivandrum. Adjacent to the temple entrance is a large pond. The temple is large, with inumerous pillars with carvings in the dravidian style. But the main attraction is the 18 ft idol of Vishnu, in the "anantashayanam" (Sleeping Posture of Lord Vishnu). The idol can be seen through 3 doors. The temple is crowded during the festive seasons and tourists should be extra cautious of the local vendors.
You have to wear a traditional dhoti (men) or Sari (Women) to enter the temple, trousers, shirts etc is not allowed.
