Travel Tips for Thiruvananthapuram

Chakram

by dsantosh

The Chakram (Wheel) made of wood is used to move water between paddy fields and water channels in the earlier days. This traditional method is a rare sight these days.

Usually operated by men by sitting on bamboo polls, the wheel is peddled to move the water. The farmers sing songs in a uniform rhythm filled with varying emotions of hard labour, hope, fortunes and the ups and downs . A true natural life of the not so rich Kerala farmers of the yester years.

Methan Mani - A unique clock

by ushar

When u stand infront of the Sree Padmanabha Temple (facing the temple) on the left side U can see some 'Malikas'. In one of the Malika this clock is kept.
You can see it from the road...It is a unique kind of clock .
In your hurry to enter the temple dont miss it.

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple

by PierreZA

This old temple (>250 years) is quite impressive. It is in the central area of the city.
As far as I know, visitors are not allowed to enter the temple. But, you are free to look around and watch all the activities around the temple.

Beemapalli, The Beautiful Mosque

by ajayzener

This shrine, dedicated to the memory of Beema beevi, a pious muslim lady believed to have been endowed with extraordinary powers, is situated about 5 kms south west of Trivandrum.

This mosque is about 2 Km from the airport.

A ten-day festival, known as Chandanakuda Mahotsavam is celebrated to commemorate the death anniversary of Beema Beevi, starting from the first of Jamadul Akbar (March - April) of the Hijra Year.

Earthern pots known as Chandanakudam smeared with sandalwood paste, their mouths covered with white cloth, garlands tied around the neck, three incense sticks thrust into the cloth covering and filled with coins, are brought by the devotees as offering.

Inside the shrine , a purification ritual known as Ratheeb is conducted and art forms like Dharamuttu, Vadithallu etc are staged. On the last day, a spectacular procession led by a couple of caparisoned elephants, panchavadyam, Dharamuttu etc is held and a thundering display of fireworks marks the conclusion of the festival.

Mateer Memorial Church

by Willettsworld

This 19th century church, located near the Napier Museum, is made entirely of stone. It is dedicated to the London Missionary Society's missionary, Samuel Meteer, who contributed in the social and educational fields of Kerala. Built in typical Anglican design, this imposing stone structure has some fine arch glass windows with delicately carved borders. Other major attractions of this church are the huge bell tower and a large cross. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited.
