I asked this on a couple of other forums (about the taxi) and the cost varied between 200 rupees to 450 rupees. Apparently there is a taxi booking service at the airport and it has set prices.

The all-vegetarian food was served from huge containers on to banana leaves placed on the table. No cutlery or crockery was available. You eat with your right hand is considered "dirty". To ensure I made no faux pas, I spent most of the time sitting on my left hand.
After the meal, a long trough in an other room with maybe one hundred taps in a row, ensured that you could clean your hands. Even the lassi (yogurt drink) was ladled into your cupped hands. I found the whole experience of eating with my hands, the number of people present, the sheer honour of being invited and the fact that we were treated as long-lost friends, the absolute highlight of our trip to Inida. Sheer magic!
Kallar River.

Kallar is 40km from Thiruvananthapuram,Its on the way to Ponmudi,(Ponmudi means Golden Vally).
Ponmudi is tiny hill resort at Western Ghats.Its an upper Valley.
Kallar river is isnide forest,you have walk for 2km treck.The river&forest is great scenery and tranquility,water is crystal clear.
There is no hotel ,coffee shop ,its not typical tourist place.So we packed Lunch from Oasis food court,(Kasavadaspuram)&water.
Had lunch at river bank,then we start going up to water falls.The path is slippery&narrow,it took 1.20min for 2km :)Retrun time it was 1hr.fast we came down.
The treck was so good,can see small streams,listen birds singing.
Thali

Thali is a delicious local dish made of rice, fish/meat, vegetables and some sauces. In the villages they serve it on banana leaf, and you are supposed to eat it with your fingers, taking the rice and mixing it with the sauces and so.

Varkala is also an important Hindu Pilgrimage.Its famous for 2000 old Janardhana swamy temple.
The pic is taken from Cliff, from here the Landscape is beautiful.
There was road going up there,
its private property hotels,etc,but can go and have view:).
padmanabhapuram palace

This should not be included under a Trivandrum tip.It is in Tamil Nadu really but it is easily accessible from trivandrum, 63km and was the seat of the travancore rulers.
Compared to other palaces in India, palaces in Kerala are not all impressive from the outside.Once inside the sheer beauty of wooden carvings the environment friendly designs and the floors take your breath away.This is an architectural student's delight.I know carpenters who go there to get inspiration from the exotic mahogany and assorted carvings
The palace is undergoing renovation now but worth a visit.
