Trivandrum to Periyar
by DebBowers
What is the best way to get to the Periyar nature reserve from Trivandrum (or Kovalam)time it takes and approx cost. If it is too far to make a day trip can anyone recommend a decent mid-price hotel nearby. Many thanks.

Few years ago , i went to Periyar National PArk. we stayed at Thekaddy . my taxi driver took us from Trivandrum (Kavalom) to Thekaddy - it seemed to take whole day. then we went to cochin. I dont have the fare as we hired him for few days. Althogh the mileage is not great, it does take a while as its hilly and roads are not all that great. I have the contact for the driver if you need it.

Travel Tips for Thiruvananthapuram
The wedding dinner
by grets
Once the wedding was over, we made our way out of the building to leave. The bridegroom's father came running after us and declared: "You must stay for the food". So, we went back in again and hung around unil all the tables were laid.
They'd invited 2500 people to the wedding, but only about 1500 had turned up. We were the only westerners. There was a huge throng of people waiting to enter the dining room through steel gates. I have never seen so many people and so many dining tables in one place.
As we approached, the sea of people opened up, and we were allowed through first. We were treated like royalty. We were placed on the top table along with the family of the bride and groom who went out of their way to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. I never did see where the happy couple themselves ate.

this is a festival which has entered the guiness records for the sheer number of women taking part in a religious gathering. All party, all religion', all women festival where roads and bylanes within a ten km radius from the temple are invaded by women with makeshift kilns made of bricks and firewood from dried coconut leaves .
women after a month long penance take part in this festival by cooking rice and related sweets which are offered as prasadam to attukal devi. This takes place in the month of kumbham (february-march). this is the culmination of a ten day long festivities .This year pongala offering is on march 3rd.

Padmanabhapuram Palace
by ajayzener
Padmanabhapuram Palace is situated about 55 Kms from Trivandrum in the Nagarcoil district in a place called Tuckalay. This palace is built in Kerala style architechture. This palace was once the abode of the King of Travancore. Originally the palace covered an area of 86 acres but today it is in 6.5 acres of land.
The palace complex was constructed around 1601 A.D by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal who ruled Travancore between 1592 A.D. and 1609 A.D. (767 M.E and 784 M.E). The construction of the Perumal palace at the centre of the complex was completed in 1744 A.D. On the day of its completion, Maharaja Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma, dedicated this palace to Lord Padmanabha and named the palace Sri Padmanabha Perumal Palace.
The palace is open for public viewing now every day from 9 AM to 4 PM
The entrance fee is Rs. 50 /- per adult, you can carry a camera at an additional fee of Rs. 25 and a video camera at a rate of Rs. 1500/-

Palace-Dance hall
by radz
This is Dance hall, pic was taken from other top floor chamber,
where the ladies used to sit and watch .The only Navarathri Mandapam(hall)used as dance hall. This is the only stone structure in whole Palace.Others all build by lime plastered walls&heavy dark teak wook.
Can you notice the jet black floor, reflects sunlight,it gives an illusion of water on floor.
Dont know you can make out in this pic,but when you real it seems so.:)
