Beaches other than Goa
Hiya All
I’m looking for somewhere to spend Christmas and New Year, I am planning a railway journey but I also want to spend a week or two on a beach, preferable one that isn’t too crowded.
I haven’t hit on any particular resort area yet so I would be grateful for any advice on beaches where I could spend a week or two swimming in the day and having a quiet beer in evening, it doesn’t need to be the cheapest place (I’m not looking for a hut).
Does anyone know Gokarna or any of the quieter beaches either side of busy, busy Goa?
Also, Miharika9 has given me some good info on beaches around Mahabalipuram; can anyone recommend any particular beaches and/or hotels in Tamil Nadu?
Any info on a good driver/guide or travel agency covering these areas would also be much appreciated.

I've stayed at both Fisherman's Cove and the Ashok Beach Resort (now GRT Temple Bay), and liked them both, the first is, or was, more luxurious but further from Mahabalipuram (only 35 km from Chennai airport), however the second has been taken over since I stayed there so don't know what it's like now, certainly it has been renovated. Both have swimming pools as well as beach access, and both have (or had) good restaurants. Be warned that it is not a good idea to walk from Temple Bay - it would be much too far to do this from Fisherman's Cove - towards the temples: unless things have changed, the local fisherfolk use part of the beach between the hotel and the temples as a public toilet! No problem with the beach in front of these hotels, of course.

Fisherman's cove is an excellent place near Chennai.I have stayed here and it is true value for money.Kumarakkom resort in Kerala is also good.

You may visit to of the beaches:
1) Golden Beach near to Chennai
2) Kovalam which is conidered a beach meant for foreigners.

Last year we headed for South Goa and a small place called Benaulin, Really Beautiful beach and low key, No mass tourism – Yet !!
It might just be your sort of place, their are some great restaurants serving excellent food and a few lively beach bars for your evening entertainment !!
We found a beach bungalow and splashed out – en-suite and even had a western style toilet ;- ) and only a few yards to the Arabian Sea ! – and all for just under £4 a night !!
