Travel Tips for Thiruvananthapuram

Covalam Beach

by SirRichard

Just 10 km away from Trivandrum, this 3 or 4 beaches are quite crowded and busy even in low season. It's not so wild anymore, as tourist resorts are growing fast here, and charters from Europe come more frequently each year!
There is a bus from Trivandrum (East Fort) to Covalam, that takes around 20 minutes. It stops at the Ashok Complex. By taxi, it could be around 150 Rs.
Covalam has 3 beaches:
- Lighthouse beach (south), popular and crowded.
- Hawah (central), Ashok Hotel and local fishermen.
- Samudra (north), the less crowded.

Chai (tea)

by SirRichard

Indians are really tea fans, they drink it everyday several times a day. The way they have it here is hot with milk and sugar. At any street stall you can see the way they prepare it, pouring the liquid from one glass to another. Is pretty safe to drink, as it's boiled water. I did it daily and was OK all the trip.

Chembai Music Festival

by ushar

On the occasion of Ekadasi the Chembai music festival is held annually in Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala every September in memory of Chembai Vaidyanath Bhagawathar, an ardent devotee of Lord Sree Guruvayurappan. The festival is an eleven day affair and is organised by Sri Chembai Memorial trust.
The highlight of the festival is group singing of saint Thyagaraja's 'Pancharatna Krithis' on Dasami day by several leading artists. A group concert marks the end of the festival on the night of Ekadasi. This includes five of Chembai's most favourite songs 'Vadapiganapatim' (Hamsadhwani), 'Rakshmamsaranagatam' (Natta)', Paavanaguru pavanapuradeeswara' (Hamsanandi)', Mamava sadaajanani' (Kanada) and Karuna Cheivan entu thamasam Krishna' (Yadukula kamboji).

Sree Chitra Art Gallery.

by ushar

This place is an ideal spot of for those who love to see some master pieces of well known artists (original).
It has rich collection of the Kerala's favourite artist Raja Revi Varma. It also has the collection of works by Russian emigrant Roerich, copies of Rajput and Mughal paintings, works from the Tanjore School of Art, and copies of paintings from Ajanta Caves besides some collection miniature paintings from china, Japan and Tibet.

aruvikkara dam

by 6aruna

If you want to get away from Trivandrum city for a day, this is the place. Aruvikkara dam supplies drinking water to the city. It is situated 16 km from the city.

The site is also famous for two ancient temples situated on the banks of the river. The temples are dedicated to Devi and to Ayyappan . Feeding rice to the fish in the river is the custom here. Believed to cure warts. The temples are built at a higher level on a rocky hill and there is a stair running up from the river basin to the sanctum sanctorum. This is for devotees to take a dip in the river and pay homage to the goddess.
There is no doubt that ancient India had a better aesthetic sense than now.
The concrete absurdities which has been erected in the name of tourism development are eyesores. So it is better to spend a few minutes feeding fish then head down stream beautiful scenery.
