Traditional architecture with great comfort
by Justin_goa about Travancore Heritage
The Travancore Heritage is a sea side resort in 15 acres of lush green coconut garden and landscaped environs located at Chowara - south of Kovalam, near Trivandrum, Kerala.
The courtyard within the 'Nalukettu' in its center, around which the four wings of the house were built in timber, bring in the air, sunlight and the rain water right into the house making the inhabitants live in tune with Mother Nature. Travancore Heritage comprises of many such houses built at various periods in the past 60 - 100 years from several locations in Travancore, rebuilt at the site after being dismantled and transported with utmost care, with all their architectural grandeur with fine woodcarvings on the rafters, gables and the connecting timber members on the walls intact. The resort stands on a high cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea and a long wide beach of powdery white sand. The Travancore Heritage is conceived and developed as a Heritage Property to bring to life the age-old traditional architectural splendor of the region with its typical timber houses and 'Nalukettus' with tiled roofing, which allow for living in communion with all the elements of Nature.

Hi,
I am thinking of going to Travancore Heritage in January 2006 and have some questions for you:
1. How far is the hotel from the main beach resort area please?
2. Has anyone stayed here and got any tips?
3. Are ATMs widely available (can't be bothered with travellers cheques!)
4. any must do's whilst I am there?
5. any recommendations for resaurants? Love spicy!!
Thanks for your help

Hi
Travancore Heritage is a great hotel with lovely settings. It would about 8-10 kms I think from the main Kovalam beach area, which can be a drag especially if you want some late nights as Kovalam is the happening place to hang out. Get yourself a good massage (ayuvedic)The in house restaurant is good. For good spicy food you will have to go to Trivandrum city about 15kms from Kovalm Lots of buses, autos, taxis plying from Kovalam.
Cheers

We shall be staying at the T.H. in March, and would be grateful for any info regarding the place, e.g. alternative local places to eat, availablity of booze etc. We are hoping to get up to Alleppey at some point for 3 or 4 days to do the houseboat cruise etc. so if any one has any advice on getting there from T.H. or any recommendations as regards accommodation (homestays etc.) any info would be gratefully received, Regards, SW

Hi
T.H. is a bit off the tourist haunts of Kovalam. Its a great place to relax and enjoy a hassle free holidays Alternate places to eat are in the main Kovalam area about 10kms away and of course in Trivandrum City Liquor is easily available in the hotel
From TH you could either do it by road or by train Accommodations in Allepey are few Its best to take a couple of days houseboat cruise and move on to Cochin. For more info contact a person I know in Cochin for more details. I'm sure he will be able to help out. Name's Ivor Collis and email ID is : rhema@md3.vsnl.net.in

I persume the T.H that you mentioned is in Chowara, Trivandrum. This is a fairly remote area but you can eat at the neighbouring places like SOMA THEERAM or MANAL THEERAM . They have good ethinic dishes along with western. Alleppey is 156 kilometres from trivandrum which is 22 kilometers from Chowara, so approximately it may take three hours by road. It is not clear to me that where you want to have accomodation - in Alleppey?. Pls. mail me I'll try to see what I can do

Cochin is a beutiful place. There are lots of activities you can choose from. There are several hotels ,which are expensive. At the same time there are many villas for rental and homestays, which are reasonable. I stayed with cochinstay.com. Ashish, the owner was wonderful. He arranges rooms or villas. contact him at ashish@cochinstay.com
Have a nice trip!

My husband, daughter and I stayed at the Kovilakom Lake resort(5 suites)- Alleppey in Jan 2006.
The accomodation and food were superb.
The staff were simply outstanding - a home away from home.
We did not hire a houseboat but opted for a day backwater cruise - absolutely unforgettable. Weaving through the canals and watching the idyllic villages on the backwaters - scenes that are imprinted on our memories.
Happy travels
Kerala, Poovar accomodation and info.

We are planning a trip to Kerala in Feb 05 and interested in Poovar. Has anyone any info on the area and accomodation recommendations. We don't want anything too basic but neither the "luxury" end. Also interested in boat trips along the backwaters.

Hello Nick,
I have just spent the last well I don't know how long reading your pages on Kerala (other bits too) So much useful information and interesting stories. Its so much better than reading from brochures or even the very useful but limited Rough Guide to... books. This site is all new to me so your pages have also helped me to see how I could put together my pages. I feel quite excited at the prospect of going to Kerala but then again I get quite excited about travelling anywhere! With so much choice now that is probably the hardest thing, deciding where to go especially when like us you only have a maximum of 4 wks a year to get away on your own. We being me and David, my husband and beloved(ha ha) of 32yrs. We like to go away in Feb as this seems such a good month weather wise in a lot of far flung places, monsoons being earlier or later plus our wedding anniversary is then and that can be a nice romantic excuse for two otherwise unromantic people! Well, back to reality now and a pile of ironing. Thank you for replying and for such an interesting read. Regards, Debra.

Hiya,
Thanks Debra, there is a resort there called wilsons, apparently he has been letting it run down a lot over the past couple of years as his lease, or some equivalent, is up. Best avoid that place now but Poovar beach area is great, if you go down to the beach take plenty of fresh bottled water as the fishermen really appreciate it, also give them a hand with the nets.
