Travel Tips for Thiruvananthapuram

Oppana

by dsantosh

Oppana dance, is performed as part of the wedding celebrations among the Muslims of Malabar region in Kerala. During Oppana, the bride in her wedding dress is surrounded by maidens and young female relatives. They will start clapping their hands, sing and dance. The songs of Oppana are first sung by the leader and are repeated by the chorus. The themes are often teasing comments and innuendoes about the bride's anticipated wedding and so on...This is a female dance and normally men are not a part of the function..

ARUVIKKARA TEMPLE and DAM

by ushar

Aruvikkara \ Aruvikkara Dam
This famous pilgrim centre surrounded by beautiful scenery and has an ancient Bhagavthi Temple built on rock. The spot houses the temple, with a rock cut shrine dedicated to goddess Durga Bhagavathy, the divine embodiment of female power.

It is situates on the bank of the river Karmana, which is filled with large number of fishes which are fed by the devotees.

The famous Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashram is located here. This is both a pilgrim centre and a picnic spot which is located 30 kms away from the Thiruvananthapuram city.

Aakulam Tourist Village

by ajayzener

About 10 Kms from Trivandrum city and 3 Kms from Ulloor is the Aakulam Tourist Village. I visited this place in Jan 2007. I was told that there is boating, a childrens park, a swimming pool and a fountain show.

I reached there on a sunday at about 5:30 PM and I was pleasantly surprised to find the place not so crowded unlike the other places in trivandrum.

There were different kinds of Boats available, and you can take it till the Veli lake through the backwaters. The pedal boats cost Rs. 20 per hr, there are also row boats and speed boats and boat safaris.

The swimming pool was crowded, there were lots of people, We wanted to see the musical fountain but the gatekeeper said that unless there are 25 people they dont run the show. Else we need to pay up 500 Rs.

We went to the childrens park and climbed up the hill, the view was good and we spent some time there....

Overall I think someone had this idea to put up a nice tourist village, but the whole idea was not well implemented. The place is not maintained well and the lake and backwater is dirty with lot of filth floating by. The grass I think was never cut after it went operational. But still a nice place to visit once for a sunday walk.

Napier Museum

by suvanki

This museum, along with an art gallery and Natural History Museum are located with the Zoo in a large botanical park.

A single ticket covers admission to all the museums..Sorry, but not sure of cost....out of date guide book quotes 5 rupees.

Open Tues - Sun.
Photography prohibited inside the museums.

Housed in a brightly coloured 19th century Keralan style building, designed by R. F. Chisholm for the Governer of Madras. When it opened in 1857, the museum was not a success, (museums being a new concept in Southern India!).

Creating the Gardens and zoo in an effort to attract visitors took 2 years.

The museum has examples of Keralan lifestyle including lifesize figures of Kathakali dancers, and other costumed figures.

Bronzes, musical instruments, stone carvings, masks and other objects are displayed.

Trivandrum Zoo

by ajayzener

Trivandrum zoo is situated in the museum complex. It is spread across a large area and the animals are kept in open enclosures rather than in cages. The zoo has lions, tigers, leopards, giraffes, zebras and a lot of other animals and birds. The zoo is open everyday from morning 10 to evening 4:45. There is also a reptile house which you can visit after visiting the zoo.
