Although we usually stay at midrange hotels if possible, we decided to stay at Hotel Taj Chandela in Khajuraho. A double room cost 75.- USD/night here, (it was a standard double but was luxurious anyway) the same price you pay for a cheap motel room in my country. It is definitely recommendable because the same type of hotels of this hotel chain (Taj) can cost more than 300.- USD per night if they are in a big city even in India and you get the same service and the same luxury, only the price is 1/4 of what you pay in Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore.
Rooms come well-equipped and immaculately clean and everything is available that you can expect from a 5-star hotel. Service is also according to the highest standards. Meals and drinks are not cheap, of course. Expect to pay Rs. 300-400 for a meal and Rs. 200.- for a Kingfisher. Of course you can go out and dine at a cheaper place.
So it is a good place to treat yourself a little bit of ultimate luxury you wouldn't otherwise pay for, not even in the bigger cities of India.
In off-season the hotel is occupied mainly by Indian businessmen who hold their conferences here. It's a good thing because they use the conference room instead of the large swimming pool where you are almost on your own. Swimming pool is not open to nonguests, fortunately. There is a music recital in the bar every night from 8 to 9 in the evening. Musicians (father with a sitar and young son with the tabla) are professional and charming.
