Travel Tips for Khajuraho

Kingfisher's Under the Starry Khajuraho Sky...

by kenmerk

After the bumpy dusty death defying 5 hour hayride on the bus from Orchha, nothing looked quite so good on the menu in Khajuraho as a big bottle of cold Kingfisher beer....

Of course, though, I would have ordered the same thing even if I had jetted in here first class... (See,,, there are some universally "Good" things in life, afterall...)

Enjoying The Local Life

by keeweechic

This was a very different welcome than we had all had earlier in the day. When the tour bus turned up, we were swamped by venders and again when leaving the temples to walk to the bus. Most were very aggressive including an old woman who I was pretty much fighting off with the garland of flowers she was trying to sell me by shoving over my head. She was a feisty thing and wasn’t going to give up. Coming back in the afternoon by myself was a very different story. No one approached me and I was left to wander at will. Wild Boar wandered in the sides of roads. Small shops were quiet after the tourist rush in the morning. Most sit in their darkened shops with their air conditioners off. The moment you approach, everything is switched on and you are welcomed in. Of course they try and tempt you with their wares but nothing is too pressurized. No one wants to be missed out so I did them all, one by one and only buying a few small souvenirs. I was approached by a young man who offered to show me some more shops and I let him. This proved to be an experience to change my memories of Khajuraho.

Huge snout... Useful... Powerful... Beautiful...

by Guantanamera

The huge snout shown here is that of the great Hindu deity Vishnu, represented here in his manifestation as the boar (vishwa varaha, his third incarnation)...

This sculpture is located at the Varaha temple and has 674 mini-sculptures carved onto it!

State Bank of India Building

by keeweechic

The Old State Bank of India building is a government run bank and will change travelers cheques and foreign exchange for you. Their hours are usually 10.00am to 2.00pm Mon-Fri and from 10.00am to noon on Saturdays.

Panna National Park

Panna National Park, 32 km away One hours drive away from Khajuraho and extending over 543 km, spread along the banks of the River Ken, the park's topography is a magnificent one of deep gorges, tranquil valley and dense teak forests. During the monsoons, the park is a lush green haven with cascading waterfalls. The park's area includes the former shooting reserves of the erstwhile royal state of Panna and Chhattarpur and the jungles today harbour many species of wildlife. The tiger can be glimpsed here, along with other rare species such as the Leopard, Wolf and Gharial. Most likely, it will be here if the Caracal, a vanishing cousin of the extinct Cheetah, is ever sighted. Herds of Blue Bulls, Chinkaras and Sambars are a common sight. The Wild Boar, the Sloth Bear, the Cheetal, the Chowsingha, the Indian Fox, the Porcupine, and a host of lesser fauna are also seen. A separate sanctuary for Gharial has been set up. The park can probably boast of the highest density of the Paradise Fly-Catchers. This rich avian and faunal life combined with its picturesque scenery make a visit to the Park a memorable one.
