Travel Tips for Aurangabad
Ajanta Paintings
by SirRichard
In some of the caves you can find wonderful colourful detailed Buddhist paintings on the walls, covering all them with incredible details. They are pretty well conserved. Flash photography is prohibited inside, of course!
All the paintings represent scenes and legends of Buddhism.
Slumdog Millionaire
by MM212
When the film Slumdog Millionaire was awarded the Best Picture award in February 2009, I happened to be at the Aurangabad airport waiting for my flight to New Delhi. That morning, I had been packing my bag at the hotel and every TV channel was showing the Academy Awards Ceremony and celebrating every Oscar win by the team that made the legendary film. Slumdog Millionaire was the pride of every Indian. It was simply fantastic to be in India during this time and to see the Oscar fever leading up to the main event and afterwards. Attached is a photo of the flat-screen TV at the modest airport showing the historical win. All eyes were on it!
Shortcut in Ellora
by SirRichard
From Cave 25 to Cave 29 the narrow path seems to be cut, so many people turn around, go down and climb up again by the other hill.
The shortest way is to follow a narrow (really narrow) path UNDER the waterfall, a bit slippery but safe, climb some steps and you can enter the 29 by the rear door.
Tomb of Aurangzeb
by lynnehamman
Just outside Aurangabad is the humble tomb of Emporer Aurangzeb. The tomb is very plain, unadorned, according to his wishes. He wanted to do penance for the sins that he had committed during his lifetime., particuarly because he had overthrown & imprisoned his father Shah Jehan, accusing him of extravagance for building the Taj Mahal. Many pilgrims still visit this tomb, assuring Aurangzeb a place in history, whatever he may have done during his lifetime.
Ellora Caves
by BluBluBlu
These are one of the highlights of India...absolutely wonderful. Buses run about every half an hour from Aurangabad. All of the caves are carved out of the rocky escarpment...from the top downwards...an amazing achievement...especially in the 6th century AD! Some of the caves are Buddhist...some Hindu...and some Jain...but the best of the best is the Kailash Temple...you just cannot believe it was carved out of solid rock...as the workmanship is unbelievable!
