Travel Tips for Aurangabad

Ajanta Caves

by SirRichard

Ajanta caves are some 40 kms away from Aurangabad. These famous caves are located in a superb natural scenery, hanging in the walls of an S shaped gorge.
They were rediscovered by chance by a british army officer who was visiting this area searching for tigers!! They didn’t have a clue that they were discovering 28 wonderful Buddhist caves.

Looms

by Willettsworld

When we had finished our tour to the Ellora Caves, we got taken to this silk and cotton clothing factory in the city and shown how they made the clothing using traditional hand-operated looms, one of which came from Keighley in Yorkshire, England. Aurangabad is famous for Mashru and Himroo fabrics made of cotton and silk with the luster of satin. Himroo weaving is very characteristic and distinctive. Fabrics and shawls from Aurangabad are much in demand for their unique style and design.

Khuldabad

by MM212

One of the holiest towns in this part of India, Khuldabad, whose name translates to "Abode of Eternity," is the burial place of some 1500 14th century Sufi Moslem saints. The abundance of domed shrines of these saints earned the town the nickname "Valley of the Saints," which led the pious Aurangzeb, the last great Mughal Emperor, to select it as his own burial place. Khuldabad is located 30 minutes from Aurangabad, only a short distance before reaching Ellora. It makes an interesting quick stop on anyone's itinerary when visiting the area, and completes one's understanding of the history of Aurangabad.

Bibi-ka-Maqbara - Monumental Gateway

by MM212

As was typical in imperial mausoleums of the Mughal period, the entrance of Bibi-ka-Maqbara consists of a monumental gateway located in the centre of the wall facing the main façade of the mausoleum. To emphasise symmetry, the gateway is mirrored by three other pavilions (baradaris) on each side of the rectangular enclosure. The monumental gateway of Bibi-ka-Maqbara is located on the south side and is designed in the same exquisite style as the actual mausoleum (see attached photos). It is a polygonal structure built with carved marble and stucco and lavishly decorated. Its façades contain iwans (porticoes) with pointed arches and topped by small minarets, whereas the interior is crowned by an inner dome and decorated with colourful floral motifs.

Ellora Caves

by Willettsworld

The cave temples of Ellora, listed among the World Heritage sites, are 30km northwest of the city. They feature rock-cut caves with beautiful temples and monasteries. There are 34 caves in all, 12 Mahayana Buddhist caves (550-750 A.D.), 17 Hindu caves (600-875 A.D.) and 5 caves of the Jain faith (800-1000 A.D.). However, the finest of the group is cave 16 known as the Kailasa or Kailasanatha Temple - designed to recall Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. It looks like a freestanding, multi-storeyed temple complex, but it was carved out of one single rock and is just breathtaking.

My main reason of coming to Aurangabad was to see the caves at both Ellora and Ajanta and I came here first as part of a car tour I took from my hotel (see transport tips). My info and pictures can be found on my Ellora page below:
