Travel Tips for Aurangabad

Ajanta Cave 17

by Paul2001

Cave 17 has more murals than any other cave at Ajanta. Amongst the many high quality murals are paintings of beautiful women flying overhead, a princess surrounded by her attendents(pictured here) and numerous images of the Buddha. The pillars that support the ceiling are carved in the likeness of dwarfs.

Required for the long walk to the caves

by travelmana

Also definitely carry a small fan or newspaper to fan oneself coz it can get a bit hot and humid after a lot of walking and esp inside the caves.
Also purchasing a book guide before entering the caves is a good idea and also most definitely hire a guide as also no book or any research knowledge can explaing the finer intricacies of the paintings or scultures as a guide with a torch. Guides are available at the entrance and are government approved with standard rates. Wear light cotton clothing and carry plenty of water in ur ruck sack. An important tip is to carry a mobile or camera having high resolution and clarity as no photos or video recording having flash is permitted inside the cave.

Chini Mahal

by MalenaN

Chini Mahal is a two story building that used to be covered in blue and white tiles. Now only a fragment of the tiles remain and the roof of the building has collapsed.
The king of Golconda, Abul Hasan Tana Shah, was held a prisoner here for 12 years before he died in 1699. He had been captured by the Moghul emperor Aurangazeb.
Several other kings have also been kept prisoners in Chini Mahal.

Bibi Ka Maqbara

by muddybok

Bibi Ka Maqbara (a.k.a. Poor Man Taj Mahal) is situated 5km away from Aurangabad city. It is the burial place for Aurangabad 1st wife, Rabia ud-Durani and an imitation of the Taj Mahal of Agra.

I have not been to Taj and I cannot make too much comparison between the two. I guess the layout and surrounding of the tomb is very much similar to Taj but some how the architecture and materials seem to be of substandard to that of Taj.

When airasia (Lee) found out am touring India last year end, he was asking me to bring back some Taj Mahal brand of cigar. (that bugger love to finish off my cigars) I reply I am not touring North India, there won't be Taj Mahal here, and however I can probably get some tak mahal (not expensive) cigars for him. Since he never replied to get some cheap cigars, I didn't buy any.

Ellora Cave 12

by SirRichard

Another interesting Buddhist cave is number 12. It is a 3 storey cave with a wonderful central patio with many carved statues. There is a narrow stairs to climb to the upper floor. Not many paintings on the wall, but the carvings and columns are really impressive…
