Hi - what's your budget range?

Re: Hotel near CST (Victoria Terminus)

I looked up on Google and found what appears to be a clean place to stay for the night. Called http://www.empireroyalehotels.com/
Empire Royal Hotel - it is opposite VTI and clearly in one of those old colonial type buildings nearby that has been altered over the years and possibly may suit.

Also look at Trip Advisor reviews etc etc:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g304554-d658970-Reviews-Empire_Royale_Hotel-Mumbai_Bombay_Maharashtra.html

some of the comments made are familiar with many hotels in India.
e.g. 'dubious building' 'taxi driver waiting for his cut' 'low ceilings' 'moth ball smell'

yes all these are very familiar in India and nothing to be concerned about at all. And it seems that when the original Empire Royal Hotel opened its doors at the turn of the 19th century, the room heights were awesome because the current set up means that they installed 2 floors into one previous !

Actually in the early morning getting to VTI should not present a problem from any down town locations.

Just want to say that if you select a place that has not been personally recommended, ask to see the place BEFORE you pay!! If you are not satisfied, you will not get your money back once you pay.

Re: Hotel near CST (Victoria Terminus)

The best place I can recommend is the Hotel Residency on DN Road, Fort next to the Citibank office. Generally this place is always full so try to book it well in advance. It is just a few minutes walk away from the train station at CST as well as the Western Railway local train station at Churchgate. Empire Royale is a slightly more expensive place than it is worth for the price you pay. Cheaper options are also available near the Residency called the Benazeer Hotel. Then there is Railway Hotel near the General Post Office. You can also try the New Bengal Hotel near Crawford Market which also has once of the best Bengali food restaurants in Mumbai called Howrah and Zaffran for some lovely North Indian food.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Aadil.

Travel Tips for Mumbai

Hiranandani Gardens

by husain

You may think you`re in a different world suddenly-- coming out of the narrow lanes and dusty roads, you enter what looked to me like an unreal movie set...

Hiranandani Gardens is a township under development at Powai.
Many shopping malls, restaurants are coming up in the area.

Sleeping everywhere

by BeChar

People sleep everywhere.
It appeared to be a custom there, probably due to the warmth (everyday 30-32°C in december), the large population and the fact that people spend much time in the street.

No wonder that dogs behave the same !

Subtleties of language

by Amitu

It is a feature of most cultures that indirect speech is the most polite form. "Would you mind if I looked at this?" is considered more polite than "Show me that." This is also true in Indian languages but not all Indians speaking English are versed in the full form of the language and may inadvertently seem abrupt in their speech. The touts that have only learned a bit of English on the street aren't intentionally putting tourists off by barking rudely at them. Similarly, you may find it useful to simplify your English to get your point across. Saying "Where is the post office" may be clearer to someone than asking" Could you please tell me where I could find the post office?"

kashid beach Pure white sand, no crowd

by prasee

Kashid is definitely one of the best beaches on the Konkan coastal strip of Maharashtra. It has pure white sand and the surf that breaks here is excellent.
HOW TO GET THERE : Kashid is around 20 km south of Alibag and is on the way to Murud. From Alibag, take the road to Revdanda. This road will pass over a long bridge over the ocean. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn right for Kashid. Instead of turning right, if you turn left and go for about a kilometre, you will reach the Vikram Vinayak Mandir (Birla Temple). This is a beautiful temple built of marble The scenery, as the road progresses further south from Korlai, sometimes hugging the shoreline, sometimes climbing up thickly wooded slopes and then climbing down again offering stunning glimpses of Kashid’s beach, rates a perfect ten.
