mumbai airport to Pune or anywhere

by johntirrell

Hi I'm arriving in Mumbai from Egypt Jan 12 at 16:30 hours. Don't want to stay in Mumbai but have to go through customs and that doesn't leave me enough time to get to Goa. Can I take a taxi somewhere else or is there anywhere I can stay cheaply at the airport? any suggestions I am very flexable. Thanks johnny

The traffic in Mumbai is horrendous. It would be very risky going anywhere by taxi- depending on how much time you have before your Goa flight. Maybe its a good idea to find somewhere inside the airport to rest, freshen up and chill.

Hi - I'm a little confused about your plans. Do you have a flight to Goa booked yet? Goa airport stops air traffic in the very early evening so - as you mention - you won't have enough time to catch a flight the day you arrive. You can take an overnight bus or train to Goa if you want. Pune is a couple of hours from Mumbai - more at the time you'll likely be travelling - but not sure why you want to go to Pune? Mumbai hotels are very expensive. What is your price range? If you have an early morning flight to Goa, I would try and stay close to the airport. You can check or to get more hotel information. Areas close to the airport would be Andheri, Vile Parle, and a little further - Juhu.

Travel Tips for Mumbai

Cannot miss the Pav Bhaaji,...

by karma_kola

Cannot miss the Pav Bhaaji, Vada Pav and 'Energy' the milk drink at Chowpatty. The other absolute must-dos are (1) ride a suburban train all the way from ChurchGate Station to Andheri. (2) Have a beer at Cafe Mondegar at Colaba Causeway. (3) shop at fashion street and Linking road. (4) Read the Midday, specially the Sunday edition :). The list goes on and on... What I miss most about Bombay is the complete freedom and the choice. There is really so much you can do...go to the beach, take a weekend trip to matehran or mahabaleshwar, go to Esselworld, watch a play, go to south bombay etc etc etc... I also miss the late nights. The clubs and discos were open pretty late. And there are a whole lot of them.

A trip to India would not be complete without riding the trains. We took the train from New Delhi to Agra. At the advice of our friend's uncle, we had a driver waiting for us at the Agra train station. What we understand is that at most train stations, the taxi drivers are in partnership with hotels and other vendors, and if you just grab a cab, you are likely to be taken to places you don't want to go.

Our driver was a terrific guy. So terrific, in fact, that we hired him to drive us from Agra to Jaipur!

Sugar Cane Drinks

by keeweechic

Like the Coconut milk drinks, sugar cane is also very popular. Street vendors operate manual crushers and extract the juice from matured cane. The juice deteriorates fairly quickly so it cannot be stored for more than a couple of hours. Street vendors are certainly not the most hygienic places to try this drink, better to get from a hotel or restaurant

"Learn some Hindi"

by ni3sgalave

As a tourist, I got a lot of hassle in India from rickshaw drivers, shopkeepers, hotel owners and general touts. The best thing I ever did was to learn to say 'I don't want it', 'Go away' and 'That's too expensive' in Hindi. It makes people stop hassling you faster than anything you could say in English, possibly because it shows that you're not a brand-new arrival to India. Also good is to learn 'my name is...' which gets a great response from local people rather than just replying in English.
Get a phrase book or (better) get someone to teach you when you arrive.

Elephanta Caves

by wrldtravler

Take a 15 minute Ferry trip from the Gateway of India to the Elephanta Caves .
The 'City of Caves', on an island in the Sea of Oman close to Bombay, contains a collection of rock art linked to the cult of Shiva. Here, Indian art has found one of its most perfect expressions, particularly the huge high reliefs in the main cave.
The island was the capital of the powerful coastal kingdom and the excavations of the caves in the 6th century added to the glory of the kingdom. Later the Portuguese took possession of the island and as they first found a monolith elephant the island was named Elephanta.
