Young woman traveling alone
by efs5r
I'm in my early 20s and will be traveling to Mumbai and Goa alone in February. Does anyone have any tips for staying safe, and meeting people while I'm there?

Mostly the same advice as in the Goa forum and....
in Mumbai it's best to dress modestly to avoid unwanted attention. Skip the short shorts/skirts, low cut tops, etc. It's not worth the hassle!! You can wear capris or Indian style cotton skirts which can be purchased at any market.
Mumbai is relatively safe for women (compared to Delhi). Be careful of crowded places - markets, etc. where you may get jostled by men. If you take a bus or train, use the women's seats/compartments if available. Avoid travelling alone late at night.
Ignore touts and over-friendly strangers!! If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, go to the police or threaten to do so.
You can meet other travellers at places like Leopold's and Cafe Mondegar in Colaba (near Gateway of India).

Good reply from Donna and also take note of :
When travelling around, by train or bus - do not accept food or drinks from a stranger. There have been some reports of tourists being drugged, and robbed this way.
Always secure your luggage with a chain and lock on trains.especially overnight journeys.
Drink only bottled water.( and drink a lot - dehydration happens easily in the heat of India), and make sure that the bottle is SEALED before drinking. When ordering drinks- NEVER take ice. Ice cubes are made from WATER-which is unsafe to drink unless from a bottled source.
Never leave your passport lying around in a hotel or hostel room- keep it in a safe, or on your person.
Replacing a passport is a long and tedious process.

Excellent advice from both Donna & Lynne. I would like add a few for Goa. Please dont' stay in shacks in Anjuna, Baga beaches. Try to to stay in hotel rooms they are cheap there. Avoid travelling to and visiting night clubs in late nights. If you are a beach person, I shall recommend Calangute/ Baga beach for staying. Or you may even explore new places like Palolim. They are safe. Also suggested to avoid travelling in Bike Taxis, but take Goa Tourism conducted tours for visiting South & North Goa! Have a safe tour to Goa!

Education
by keeweechic
On the other side of things for those who are able to seek an education, the number of schools is increasing. Children from 6 to 14 must attend school and schools are free. For those over 14 education becomes more difficult with fewer teachers and much bigger classes. The fee is low but the cost of books can become too costly for lower income families and results in children being discouraged from further education. Most of the colleges in Mumbai are affiliated to the University of Mumbai Right now, Mumbai is one of the cities in India with a high level of education with the overall literacy rate being above 86%, which is higher than the national average.
Arts & Crafts Show
by Canadienne
On my second to last evening in Mumbai, a section of street was closed off near the Prince of Wales Museum.
Throughout the pedestrianized area, stands were set up with different crafts on display. There was also live music, paintings on display and a lot of visitors. I'm not sure if it was an annual event, or something more frequent than that, but it was a great opportunity to take another look at handiwork and techniques similar to that which I had seen in Gujarat.
Packing List
by shalin
Carry a rainslicker/umbrella between June-Sept.You can basically wear what you want! Medicines and toiletries are easily available in Mumbai. Most people understand English-so dont worry about the communication bit!
If,however you do have some special medicine, carry it!
The taxi driver/tour guide...

The taxi driver/tour guide drove me to a spot where clothes were being laundered manually. The scene was very Dickensian and this is where your clothes are washed if you use your hotel's laundry service.
