Taj Mahal Hotel (Mumbai)

A real classic of Mumbai, this 5 star hotel is one of the icons of the city (though the new wing, that skycrapper at the right side, is rather awful). If you can't afford to sleep here, have at least a tea in its wonderful cafeterias. Located just by the Gate of India. About 200 $ US for a single.

Opulence at the Gateway......In as much as I am tempted to put this under the Hotels heading...this place is a landmark and a tourist destination. George Bernard Shaw once mentioned that seeing this monument was enough to not see the Taj at Agra. That is overrated though! Great Architecture.
Taj Mahal Palace
by Willettsworld
Mumbai's premier hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace was built in 1903 by a prominent Parsi industralist, Jamshedji Tata who, it is said, decided to construct this beautiful hotel when he was barred from entering the "Whites Only" Watsons Hotel.
Dining at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
by MM212 about Masala Kraft
The very elegant Masala Kraft Restaurant is an excellent restaurant in Bombay serving contemporary Indian cuisine. It is located at the Taj Mahal Palace, in the historic hotel building. Although the food was exquisitely prepared, the spices seemed a little tempered (to my joy) for the mostly foreign clientele. Masala Kraft is definitely a dinner spot.
The Interior of the Taj Mahal Hotel
by keeweechic
Inside this grand old hotel there are valted ceilings, onxy columns, silk carpets, crystal chandeliers as well as a most fabulous cantilever stairway. The view across the Arabian Sea is perfect. The hotel has 565 rooms including 46 suites. The hotel also has The hotel offers the wireless broadband Internet access, videoconferencing and webcast capabilities. Even if you are not staying here, it is worth a visit to see the opulent interior or visit the loo.
It is a sham!

I recently had very bad experience staying at this prestigious property of Taj Group. I was booked into a Club Room at Taj Mahal Palace in the Palace Wing. This hotel has a lot of history attached to it and shown in one of the channels in every Taj Luxury properties across India. But unfortunately the management must have been basking in the glory of its huge name, unparallel location and history. Because right from the time I entered I found myself suddenly landed in a 'bazaar' atmosphere where all kinds of people were moving and jostling around the way they do in a shopping mall. As I did not take the courtesy transfer from airport to hotel, there was none at the main reception who would guide me to the 5th floor club reception in the palace wing. When I complained about it at the time of check-in, a senior staff escorted me to a suite without sea view (upgraded as a courtesy) which appeared quite dated. At the coffee shop called 'Shamiana' and 'Sea Lounge' most of the staff were past their prime and fit to become retired. Service was slow and unenthusiastic. Taste of food was just ok for its price. The club lounge on the 5th floor is accessed from the reception through a winding staircase, not so easy to reach. I did not find anything interesting in terms of its snack menu for high tea. Green tea served there was of extremely poor quality. The room, a suite, had some nice objet d'art of Indian make and origin. Bathroom was spacious with good toiletries. But the lowest spot of my experience was when I ordered room service for rice and lentil for lunch just an hour and half before check-out. To my utter surprise even after one long hour the order never came. As I was getting late for my flight to Kolkata I had to leave without lunch. At the time of check-out staff at reception apologized and informed that the waiter carrying the tray containing my order just tripped and fell down en route to my suite. It is indeed a shame that a hotel of Taj's stature could stoop down so low in terms of explanation, excuse and service delivery. I am definitely not going back there again and would not recommend this place to any one.
Great View, very noisy
by TripAdvisor Member KKY
I stayed in the Tower section during my stay; I had a room with the view out to India gate and the ocean, what an amazing sight. Because it is right at the India Gate, it is unbelievably noisy even though I was all the way up on the 14th floor. It is indeed a city doesn't go to sleep, and neither do you! I was even awaken at 6am one Sunday morning by the chanting and Indian classical music because of a religious ceremony. If this doesn't bother you, the room is average and comfortable. The restaurants are nice but quite pricey. The grounds is beautiful, and you must visit the Palace section of the hotel - I am sure you will be impressed by the opulance and elegance of this historical architecture. It's a place you should stay at least once!
Always and ever

The Taj is just as it's been since the 'Eighties (and probably before) -- one of the best hotels in the world. The marvelous beds beat a trip to Lourdes for rejuvenation of lumbar afflictions. The women at the desks are suspiciously beautiful (are there no class-action equal-opportunity lawsuits in India?) Our room, like those of other contributors, looked out over the Gate of India, but, although youcould spend hours in the window watching the hustle and bustle of India, it was not at all noisy. I suppose this means one should ask for a high floor with harbor view.
Loved the Taj
by A TripAdvisor Member
We have just returned from a 5 day trip to the Taj and we can only have praise for everything about our stay. The staff were exceptionally attentive and pleasant and we felt that they couldn't do enough for us, when we requested a pack of cards someone rushed out of the hotel to purchase them for us, and they were delivered to us at the poolside. We had an updated room overlooking the Gateway to India in the Palace which was beautiful and clean with a choice of silk or towelling bathrobes, lovely Molten Brown products and fresh fruit everyday. The spa was a delight, the food excellent and we cannot wait to return. Next time we will take our 9 and 10 year old children to experience this beautiful hotel. We cannot fault it.

book 4* hotel in central mumbai , where?
by Nailatourist
hello, i need some help.
which is the most central area in Mumbai and which hotel (4 or 5 star) is there to book? I've seen Sea Princess and Leela but I don't think they are
in the center,
any suggestions?
thank you
Re: book 4* hotel in central mumbai , where?
by Donna_in_India
Sea Princess and Leela are both very far in distance from the city center - not so much in terms of mileage - but with the traffic it can take at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours. If you want to stay in the city center Colaba or Nariman Point/Marine Drive area would probably be your best bets. I think the difference between a 4* (of which there aren't really too many) and 5* is huge. Five stars have far more amenities and 4 stars are more like lesser stars. Some of the 5 stars in the city center include the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Taj President, Trident Nariman Point, and the Intercontinental (which is very nice!). Check www.travelocity.co.in - www.cleartrip.com - www.makemytrip.com before checking the hotel's website to compare prices. Sometimes they'll offer a deal. You can even call the hotel and try and negotiate a deal. Since the Nov bombings many hotels have been willing to bargain a little. Have a great time in Mumbai and...welcome to India!

Hi
Ideally worli and Dadar is the most central area in mumbai. Both these places are in between business areas of south and west(bandra onwards)mumbai.
I would reccommend corporate accommodation instead of 4* hotel because its really worth.
Check out Seven serviced apartments in worli mumbai, they provide better stay options compared to 3-5 star hotels at budget rates.
Donna, nice to know that you have so much info abt mumbai area.
Cheers.

Cafe Mondegar is great as suggested. Why dont you try out the Sports Bar at Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel. Should be about 25 mins by Cab. Great Ambience. However, this being your first trip and if you arent feeling that adventurous as the sport, Mondegar is great

Information please on Pyrkes
by MikeGarden
There was a Pyrke's hotel in Mumbai many years ago (which was infamous for having a sign reading "no dogs,no Indians"), and I believe there is (or was until quite recently) a well-known restaurant called Pyrkes.
Does anyone in Mumbai know of these places? I am researching the Pyrke family, and I believe these places may have been founded by ancestors of mine.
If anyone knows anything of these plafes, would you be so kind as to contact me: gategarden@hotmail.com.
Many thanks.

Pyrkes was a restaurant just opposite the Flora Fountain at Fort which was very famous for some good Parsi food as far as I remember and later on it closed down and was shut for quite a few years before it was bought over and changed to a bank office since a long time now. Don't know whether the sign was there or not, never heard of it being there. There was a sign outside another hotel during the British times when the founder of the TATA group was denied entry to one such hotel which was called Watson's Hotel which was the first prefabricated cast iron building built in India with all the structural parts brought from Britain and assembled in Mumbai just opposite the Bombay University building. It still stands in a almost run down condition with most of the balconies fallen off and the hotel building now houses only offices of lawyers working in the Bombay High Court and City Civil & Sessions Court next to it!!! After being denied entry to this hotel since he was an Indian, Jamshedji Tata built in those times what is now still one of the best hotels in India ..... the Taj Mahal Palace!!! Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Aadil.

Hi,
I lived in Mumbai until 1974. I worked at Hutatma Chowk? (then known as Flora Fountain) from 1969 until 1971.
I have spent many hours at the Pyrke's restaurant at the circle, sipping "English Tea".
The restaurant was famous for tea of course, plus there were private booths with doors for the romantically inclined. The food was reasonable and the prices were slightly upscale, which served to keep the budget-conscious crowd away.
To the family which ran the restaurant - Thank you for the memories
