Good Mumbai Lodging Choice - Close to Airport

Good hotel, good amenities, but not terribly close to the Mumbai city center. Best advantage is that it is close to the airport, which is pretty handy for international flights from the west, which all seem to arrive and leave late into the night.

The restaurant, Peshawari, is quite good, featuring robust northern flavors. I especially like the lentils they serve, but the kababs are very tasty. I really recommend the lamb. Rustic, eat with your hands experience, but with top quality food.

A poor choice

The ITC Maratha may have been a prime property in years past, but these days the condition of the rooms is pretty appalling. The last time I stayed there, in late 2007, I could barely breathe in my room--mildew, smoke, dust, yuck. The furniture is old and beat-up. I find the entire property really depressing, particularly the central restaurant in the atrium where breakfast is served. Service is quite weak and the food is no prize either. Meanwhile, the prices are still exorbitant, as if this were still one of the only options in town. I will never return to this hotel, unless the entire place gets a thorough renovation.

An enchanting place right in the heart of Mumbai

The best city hotel we have ever seen - and we have been to many cities all over the world, the ITC Grand Central Sheraton is brand-new and conveniently located in the heart of Mumbai, within walking distance from two local train stations.

It is a very modern high-rise building which can be seem from afar, all marble and glas, and greenery all around. There is a beautifully designed outdoor swimming pool on the third floor, surrounded by a breathtaking park overlooking the busy streets of Mumbai.

The buffet breakfast is out of this world and so is the attitude of the hotel staff. The Indian restaurant on the ground floor also looked very inviting but we ate out every night.

We paid $180 per room (breakfast included) and it was worth every single cent.

THE place to stay if you are traveling to Mumbai!!!

More about ITC Maratha Sheraton

They've captured me!

by TripAdvisor Member UnrepentantTraveller

I’m (un)lucky enough to travel frequently on business. Suffice to say I stayed at the ITC Maratha on my first visit to Mumbai… and have returned there every time I’m back in town. In particular, the restaurants offer a wide selection of food so you should not get bored too soon, and it’s very close to the airport. Another reviewer described it as a little stiff - a fair comment and the reason I’ve given four rather than five stars - but this is India after all! Tip: book online and try to get a room with executive club access - the difference in price is often negligible.

Service at it's best

by TripAdvisor Member SphereHopper

There's something about the service standards in India. Everybody seems to want to please and the ITC Maratha is no exception. From the welcome at the door, the polite telephone manner, the service standards in the restaurant, this is a high quality hotel whose aim is to please.

The rooms are bordering on extravagant with the quality of workmanship just a tad better than in many Indian 5 star hotels. Large spacious rooms, 42 inch plasma TV, tea/coffee maker, large his/hers bathrooms, there was plenty of room to swing my cat.

The automated sensor light in the bathroom was a nice touch, but don't be too long sitting still in there else it will go dark on you!

Overall, great service and top notch quality just moments from the airport (with no plane noise whatsoever heard in the hotel).

Indeed, almost perfect!

Except for the fact that I got a bit irritated with the fact that for 2 out of 3 stays (Feb/Mar 2007) my minibar was plundered before I arrived, I must say this is a great hotel in all ways. People are super friendly, they offer great service and the rooms are totally ok! One staff member helped me with my laptop problems when I couldn't login (thank you Wilson!) until it was solved. And although I checked out early morning they gave me free access to the spa facilities to get a late night shower/steambath/sauna before going to the international airport for my after midnight flight. Food in the hotel is great (there is one top restaurant). Location is outstanding, right next to the international airport (max 4 minutes) and only 10 minutes from the domestic one. All in all they deserve my 5 review stars here!

Not quite perfect

by TripAdvisor Member PeteM

Just returned from an enjoyable stay at the Grand Maratha.

Pluses....

Fantastic restaurants.
Pleasant bar.
Great staff (friendlt and efficient).
Luxury bathrooms.
Fanatastic in room breakfast.

Minuses....

Bed smelt a bit musty.
Problems with air con one night.
No indoor pool.
Had to wiat 5 minutes for a table at breakfast and my coffee failed to appear.
No breakfast available in club lounge.

Having stayed at the Hyatt Regency, The Renaissance and the Grand Maratha there's not much in it in terms of quality. It's really down to personal preference. If you do stay at the Hyatt Regency then you can still have dinner at the Grand Maratha!

Not a very good hotel

by TripAdvisor Member jjtravel66

I stayed at the ITC on business a few days in August 2007. The first night I arrived at 2 am. I was so tired that I just want to sleep. I find some hair in my bed. It was gross, but because it was so late. I did not change the room. (I put a towel on the sheet). I complained to the hotel the next morning. No one apologized. I asked to change a room with a better view and non smoking. They give me one facing the garbage ground. All the bath room seems poorly maintained. The glass shower door was never cleaned. You can see the spots on the door. The shampoo was half full when I checked in, obviously someone used it and it was not changed. During my stay, I did not use it and it was still there when I check out. The breakfast services are not very nice either. They want you to wait even there is a table. No one ever says they are sorry if they did not do something right. Do Not shop at hotel shop, they sell fake product. The jewelry and pashmina shawls are all fake. I can’t imagine the hotel allow their shops to do that to their customer.

Impressive Atrium

by TripAdvisor Member GunneX

I had only a few hour stay in this hotel. Nevertheless I decided to have a session in the gym. Although the impressive atrium the gym was below average.
Rooms and food (served in the atrium) is good.

pricey, but an oasis

by TripAdvisor Member lmj

everything at the sheraton was lovely-- i stayed in the towers and thoroughly enjoyed my room, the tasty complementary breakfast, the free cocktail hour between 6-8, and the fact that the gym had new equipment (the same treadmills i use at my gym at home). also, as a single, female traveller, i completely appreciated their policy of only having female staff come to the door for room service, etc. all that said, rather pricey... but worth it for some peace amidst crazy mumbai.

by lcussen

Planning on honeymoon trip to india in october...
can anyone recommend :

1) good hotels in any of the above cities / places
and if so average price

2) rough flight price from delhi to goa

thanks

Hi,
I suggest you get hold of a copy of Lonely Planet for India which is most helpful and you can get all the information you need from 5* to budget. October is a pleasant month to be in Delhi it is Fall then, Bombay can be humid, so too is Goa. You can travel from Bombay to Goa by ship.
Have a super trip.

In order to be able to give any useful advice, we need an indication of what you're prepared to spend (or how many stars you're looking for).

For Delhi, if you are looking for a five-star hotel (I'm assuming this given that it's your honeymoon), I could personally recommend Taj Mahal Hotel at Mansingh Road (check out my tip). I also heard The Oberoi is good, but haven't stayed there myself. I'm afraid I have nothing to say for Goa, haven't been there.

Re: Re: hotels in delhi / goa / mumbai

Yes to both those - definitely the top choices. In Goa, I recommend another Taj hotel, the Fort Aguada, a 5* deluxe resort built on the ramparts of a 16th century Portuguese fortress.

Have a great honeymoon!

Re: Re: hotels in delhi / goa / mumbai

To clarify - my "yes" was to the Imperial in Delhi (recently refurbished) and historic Taj in Bombay. The others mentioned are certainly very comforable, but I'd say these are the top choices.

Re: Re: hotels in delhi / goa / mumbai

For Bombay, I would place my bets on three hotels:
1) Taj Mahal - for sentimental reasons. Location, too has historical significance (and fronting the iconic Gateway of India) and is adjacent to Bombay's tourist areas (Colaba, Fort). Flip side, lobby a bit dull and old, although the recently refurnished old wing will certainly melt every history junkie's heart.
2) ITC Maratha - certainly a class on its own, if facilities and amenities, and quality of rooms/hotel is the sole criterion. But location lacks any history, very close to airport, ideal for time-strapped business travelers, not for honeymooners.
3) The Oberoi, Mumbai - could be a good compromise between 1 and 2, although location is not as superior as Taj's (but is in Nariman Point, Bombay's old, and still foremost, business district). About 10 mins by cab to historical/shopping areas in Colaba and Fort. You have to get their bay-facing rooms - seems as if you'er on an ocean liner. Rooms are great, comfortably furnished, even better than those of Taj's. This is my choice.

Happy honeymoon!
