Bentley's Hotel: Great place in Colaba

This hotel really does have character! It's clean and has shared or private bathrooms. AC and non AC rooms. It's location is great. The prices are more expensive than in other cities, but fair compared to other hotels in the same area of Mumbai. 750-1300 Rs. for a room.

Bombay offers a range of...

Bombay offers a range of lodging. From youth hostels to *expensive* star hotels. In the good 'ol days the best hotels were the Taj and the Oberoi, both located in south Bombay, the business district. However, in recent years, more and more hotels are coming up in the western suburbs and close to the international and domestic airports - The Leela, Grand Maratha Sheraton, Le Meridian, Orchid Ecotel, to name a few; also, almost close to the airport, in the suburb of Bandra, is The Regent.
Most of the top hotels in Mumbai can charge anywhere from USD 150 to USD 250 a night. However, you should always try and ask for a discount. Most corporates have good rates here and if you are on a business trip, it would help to ask your local host to make your bookings.

Most Bang for Your Buck

There are many Five-Stars Hotels in Bombay for the Business Traveller, but these are expensive and can be compared in prices and service to the best in the world. Hence for the regular budget traveller this is not recommended. Your best bet would be a 2-3 star hotel or even a hostel for that matter. It is important to stay close to the city center or the part of Bombay you wish to see the most of. Traffic in Bombay is horendous, though the actual Distance is not much it can take over 2 hours to cover 30 km in the city's traffic. Hotels will always down play this significant bit of information.

Unique Quality: If your headed down for over 3 weeks it would make a lot of sense to rent an apt. It will work out to be cheaper and you'll be in a better (more central) part of the city, this is also recommended for groups.

Hotel Seashore: Budget Hotels in Colaba

Mumbai was our first stop in India and so this was the first hotel we stayed in here.
I was in fact expecting a lot worse!
We booked this place when we arrived in Mumbai at the accommodation desk at the airport, it was in the budget price range, had a decent write up in our LP guide and was in the area we wanted to stay in.

Colaba is located near the harbour, there is always lots going on, it is home to the cheap accommodations and cafes.

Unique Quality:
Our room was as we later found out in India the top end of the budget range. That being said it did only cost 500INR per night for the room for 2 people. We had windows with a view over the rooftops to the harbour, our room was clean enough with a fan.
The bathroom was upstairs and had a bucket and cold water tap - again very clean.

I would stay here again, the area is alive 24/7 and it is an easy walk and an easy place to pick up a taxi.

Hotel Celeste: Good option in Colaba

I booked this hotel, which is located down the lower end of Colaba Causeway Rd near Sassoon Dock, at the domestic airport as I wanted somewhere in the Colaba area and one that was reasonable priced. Hotels cost a lot more here than anywhere else in India and budget places are difficult to find and still cost Rs800-Rs1000 for tiny rooms. This place didn't look like much from the outside and has old wooden stairs but the rooms are very big and have been recently painted. My room had a large doublebed, 2 armchairs, table, large mirror, TV, ceiling fan, a/c, new large fridge, phone, 2 bedside tables, wardrobe and shelves, 24hr hotwater shower from a geyser and room service for Rs1600.

The best place to stay and...

The best place to stay and expensive by the way, is the Oberoi Taj Hotel. This hotel is beyond my budget, but I did had some cha and Indian sweets inside just to sample what's it like inside.

Unique Quality: Classic moorish architecture, fronting the Arabian Sea.

  • Opinion of Price: most expensive
  • Address: In Colaba, near the Gate of India.

200 rupees a single room,If you are on a budget and were considering the Salvation army then think again..This place is in the same area of town, and for a not much more $$$ you can have privacy and safety..Sally army in comparison is a complete dump.

Unique Quality: Nice rooftop restaurant.(delicious food, good service)
Clean, hot showers
Small. but adequate rooms, (no privacy though as there is only partitions between the rooms)
Safe..
