why do people like this place?

On my second trip to Mumbai, I thought I knew what I wanted. Someplace in South Mumbai but a little out of the way so it might be quiet. The Residency (The Fort Residency) seems to be favorite with budget travelers and the location was out of the noisey gate of india scene and closer to the churchgate station.
My tiny upper floor room was a disappointment. It was noisey as it overlooked the street where cabs and others congregated. The facilities were clean but worn and dated. Rather depressing.
The staff for the most part was ok. Messages, however, were never delivered-- and, as a result, there were missed connections with friends.
The free internet connection in the lobby was monopolized by one guest and the staff would not enforce any sort of time limit. There is a dodgy internet center around the corner.
The neighborhood was not touristic and certainly not upscale. Pirated dvd's and cheap jewelry knockoffs were all over. There were a lot of restaurants in the area heading east and south.

More about Residency Hotel

Mumbai- elegance and comfort

by piglet44 about Residency Hotel,Mumbai

We stayed here both at the start and the end of our trip. The staff were helpful and attentive, did our laundry(standard in India!!)
It was a pleasure to stay there. v. good position. Internet use. Taxis always waiting outside!

Good value

by TripAdvisor Member IT24

Very reasonably priced for Mumbai.
I was in the annexe (20 meters from main hotel), and although my room was small, it did the job. It was clean and the air-conditioning worked, and the bed was comfortable.

Excellent location, near restaurants.

Internet broke, and was not fixed for four days, but there is an internet place next door

Great hotel, very friendly staff and clean rooms

by TripAdvisor Member mad_h

I stayed at the Residenyc Hotel for a week and I did not want to leave there at the end of our stay. Compared to other hotels I have seen, Residency was the best in all aspects; clean rooms, nice bed, friendly staff and very central and best of all, good value for its money. The only critical aspect was you had to order food and most of it were very expensive. So we had to go out very early to have breakfast and had to buy from outside restaurants for lunch and dinner. Apart from that, I loved it and would go there again.

Nice hotel but not exactly friendly

by TripAdvisor Member WeeKee

After reading about the hotel on Tripadvisor we decided to stay a couple of days here. The hotel turned away our phone reservation but instead pointed us to their online reservation which sell "allocated" rooms at inflated prices (which we did).

On arrival we were instead moved into a hotel (Hotel Benezeer) next door, which I believe they recently acquired. The renovation was still in progress and the corridors smell of chemicals. The clean room was nice enough with reliable 24h hot water but ventilation was poor. The safe and air-conditioner unit were broken and we couldn't set the thermostat. There was also no-one at the door of the new location which means security is non-existent.

Unlike what was claimed on their website there was no broadband connection in our room (the reception gave us a cold "no" when asked). We also had to ask at the main reception in the next building for our complementary newspaper. The cable channel selections are very limited. Basically the hotel overpromised but underdelivered.

While we think the hotel is still rather good value (versus other 2* hotels in Mumbai), but reserve early by phone rather than to pay inflated prices on their website. While works are still in progress next door, guests should also avoid those units. Guests of the annex tend to be treated like 2nd-class guests to those in the main building.

Great Place

Spent 3 nights at Residency Hotel on Gunbow Street in Mumbai during January 2008. Hotel has about 30 rooms and the two we used were excellent. Rooms have been totally refurbished. We stayed in the least expensive rooms and they are small but totally adequate with all the basic amenities and safe, fan, AC and computer network connection. Location is ideal for tourist. Only 10 minute walk to main train station and 15 minutes to India Arch. Ideal for family and business traveler. No lounge or entertainment so single traveler must consider this. Breakfast menu is OK but would go elsewhere for lunch and dinner as the selection is limited. Trip to airport is 45 minutes in the early morning hours. Would be about 90 minutes during daytime.

OK if you don't expect much

OK to spend a couple of nights as we did, maybe a bit too small if you stay longer. Good shower pressure, hot water available 24 hours a day. We paid $142 for two nights which is normal for Bombay though a bit steep for India in general.

Clean and friendlt business hotel

by TripAdvisor Member gsturm

We stayed here in December 2007 for three nights. The room was clean, and modern with satelite TV. The bathroom was clean also. We arranged transportation from the US and when we exited the airport, they were there with our name and the hotel name on the sign. They had a room available for us 7:00 AM in the back of the hotel away from the street noise. Good, business hotel. Very friendly staff.

Very good place!

by TripAdvisor Member reisepoet

We stayed five nights there, this might have been the reason why they offered us to check out 3 or 4 rooms (- thanks for that anyway!). We decided to stay in one of the (what they call ...) "new luxury rooms" - it´s not in the main hotel but just next door. The room was quite nice, very clean, everything worked, a real good standard and great value for Mumbai (there was no "real window" in the room though, which we didn´t care much about). The size was o.k. unless you´re not travelling with 10 bags. We enjoyed staying (= sleeping) there ...

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member GHNCLE

We stayed here twice for a total of 5 nights, on arrival in Mumbai and again before we went home and were very satisfied with our rooms, the service (professional and friendly) and location of the hotel. Less than 10 minutes walk to VT/CST, 15 minutes walk to Marine Drive, 15 minutes walk to Colaba and a lot less hassle in the street. Plenty of restaurants around. We'd happily stay here again
