great views and value
Our stay was pleasant. The hotel is quite basic- but its very comfortable and has large, clean rooms. Hot water supply was ample. Staff were helpful, but quite reserved. Tea & Coffee is available all day- and there is a diningroom, that has a small menu.
Shelleys is situated in Colaba area, and faces the sea. The views are great. There is a small jetty opposite, and this area is used for weddings and parties. We watched a wedding from the hotel balcony almost every night that we were there. It is within walking distance ( 5 minutes) from The Gateway to India, and the Taj Hotel. There is a promanade leading to these two landmarks, and its a very pleasant walk. At night families stroll along, buying roasted peanuts from the numerous vendors along the way.
NB**** PLEASE NOTE THAT SHELLEYS HAS BEEN CLOSED DOWN FOR RENOVATIONS , I BELIEVE.. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED RE DEVELOPMENTS.
Unique Quality: We loved the sea-facing balcony. Comfortable chairs and pot plants.
The fresh breeze would cool the humid air.
The cleanliness of the bed-linen.
Wonderful view

Just don't
After three weeks of travelling through the dirt of India, I was really looking forward to our room at Shelley's. This mid-priced hotel was praised by the Lonely Planet for the great view of its rooms. When we arrived at the hotel (after a 20-hour trip in a sleeper-train) it turned out that they had 'misplaced' our booking. Apologies for this rather unfortunate affair were omitted entirely and we were rather brusquely informed that we could stay for the four nights we had planned to, if we moved to a new room every day at 12. Not immediately ready to let go of my visions of large showers and clean beds, I had a tour around the different rooms that were available. All of them were indeed very large but somewhat worn out and uninspired. The view differed from trees to a friendly neighborhood wall, but we never actually got to see the sea.
When we decided to think this over, we got a taste of the awful breakfast Shelley's serves. This, together with the ill-mannered way we treated throughout, made us decide to move on. When we wanted to pay for the breakfast, they accepted our money but told us we would have to buy a bottle of water too, for they had no change. Not planning to pay any more than the far-too-expensive breakfast had already cost us, we declined and said we simply wanted our change and get going. This got us a sneer and a handful of coins, still not enough to settle the bill.
With the long trek behind us and the Mumbai sun climbing, we decided to leave it at that. I would, however, like to bring this event to the attention of everyone considering staying at Shelley's. We felt mugged.

Good value for money - Shelleys Hotel
The hotel is nice, clean and value for money when compared to other places charging similar rates. It offers sea views (not all rooms though) and reminds one of the old raj days with its high ceilings and verandah and central balconies on every floor. It's situated in touristy Colaba near the Gateway of India. We arrived late at night and since the night manager wasn't there, we were asked to hand in our passports for the night, so they could enter some details in their register. Although highly concerned and after an argument, we did get them back next morning. They do book out fairly quickly. Everyone quietly expects a tip and we even had foreign exchange agents offer room service !!! The room we had on the 2nd floor was basic but clean with air-con.

A Room With A View
We thought for the price around $45-$50 US the location was great. We had a sea facing room which was a few rupees more. The room was large with desk and lounge chairs.
Unique Quality: Our view from the room looked out to the sea.
There was also a little sitting area on each floor at the end of the hall where anyone who was staying could sit and read or have cha or a lassie. There was room service and a small restaurant, although we didn't eat there as we found a restaurant we liked very much just around the corner from the hotel.

Room with a View
Nicely located hotel overlloking harbour about 200 meters down from the Taj.
Unique Quality: Does Shelleys offer pick-ups at the airport?
We currently do not offer a pick-up service. The best way to get to the hotel from the airport is through the pre-paid taxi service available at the airport, which costs approximately Rs.350.
Whats a pre-paid taxi? How do we get one at Mumbai airport to come to Shelleys?
Once you come out of the arrival terminal at Sahar International Airport, ask anybody where the pre-paid taxi counter is, go up to the counter and ask for a taxi to COLABA (Area). You have to specify your luggage, which is accordingly charged. The price is fixed, so no need to bargain (as of Jan 2002 this should cost Rs.350). When you pay for the taxi, you will be alloted a taxi cab number (License Plate Number), and you will find the taxi parked at the stand (approximately 20 to 30 feet away from the counter).
Where exactly is Shelleys located? Any landmarks, directions, etc...
The exact location of the hotel is: Shelleys Hotel, Opposite the Radio Club, near the Gateway Of India & the Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba, Mumbai - 400039. With this description, you can't go wrong.
What about 24 hour check-ins?
We always have receptionavailable at front desk, who will check you in and get you settled.
Breakfast is extra @ Rs 65/-.
