A real dream
Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai, situated on the waterfront, is a gracious landmark facing the Gateway of India.
It was built in 1903 by the Parsi industrialist JN Tata, supposedly after he was refused entry to one of the city's European hotels because he was "a native".
It's a magnificent structure that exhibits Moorish influences and it is crowned by a grand red-roofed dome.
It's worth a peek at the hotel's interior. Especially the grand central stairway and the internal galleries, which were once exposed to the elements to aid ventilation. The Taj is also worth visiting to see the Mumbai elite in their element.

NOT my favorite Bombay hotel
The Taj is a gorgeous old building on the outside. Its restaurants and shops are about as glittery and expensive as it gets, the pool area is lovely and gracious, and for decades the Taj has served as the social venue of choice for Bombay's creme de la creme. However, staying at this hotel is a bit of a rude shock, particularly considering that it's one of the most expensive in the city. The Taj's rooms--both the renovated and the unrenovated wings--are quite disappointing, with ugly or shabby furniture and carpets that should be burned. If only the hotel's management could furnish and maintain the rooms as well as they do the rest of the property!
Unique Quality: The biggest positive about the Taj is its location, directly across from the Gateway of India (get a sea-facing room here too!) and within walking distance of most of the good sightseeing in Bombay.

Colonial and luxury hotel
All the international airlines stay in this hotel, like Alitalia do ( I was guest of it).
the hotel and the service is perfect, there are suite room looking to the sea, and there is a new part looking to the swimingpool.
The hotel have many different restaurants, from traditional to international, trought one of the best Japanese in the world!
All the accomodation of a luxury hotel!
There is a disco very crowded on sunday where all the young hig class of Mumbay go to spend some hours dancing international and indian music.
But this is not my choice cause I prefer simply and clean hotel, I don't want to leave the total ammount of a annual indian family money for a bad and a shower!

Old world charm
My first visit to Mumbai was when it was still known as Bombay. I remembered it fondly as my friends and I bumped into Goldie Hawn and Sally Field, and they stopped to say hi to us!
At that time, we had wandered around the Taj Mahal hotel to see what's so great about it and was very impressed. I told myself then that I will stay there on my next visit.
My wish came true! This hotel is so full of history and is extremely grand. I feel like a queen living during the colonial times and were waited on hand and foot.
My room was huge with a separate breakfast patio facing the sea, separate dressing room and a big bathroom. My bed was a four poster king size (but of course!) and the service is excellent.
Unique Quality: Old world charm to relive the romance of the British era
Prime location, near the sea, Gateway to India and shopping.
Fabulous pool and great rooms
Wonderful English breakfast
An in-house ghost (yup, I'm not kidding). My boss was haunted by it 2 nights in a row but he found it amusing.

One of the world's best
Opened in 1904, the Taj Mahal Hotel consists of two wings: the original, much renovated, and the tower.
I know nothing about the tower. The original ranks among the finest hotels I've ever stayed in.
Like the Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, this is the place to stay if you have money to burn ... or just want to splurge.
In November 2008 Muslim terrorists attacked Mumbai. One of their targets was this magnificent hotel. They killed guests and set the hotel on fire, partly by throwing grenades.
The hotel was quickly repaired. In November 2010 its guests included the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Unique Quality: 1. Great views of the Gateway of India.
2. Gourmet restaurants: continental, Chinese, Mughal. Also a fine coffee shop (with a complimentary breakfast).
3. World-class service. (The duty manager personally escorted me to my room.)
4. High-speed internet access in the business centre.
5. Good shops, with reliably high quality merchandise.
6. Excellent location near the heart of the historic, cultural, shopping, and business sectors.

Bombay's Most Famous Hotel
The legendary Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is Bombay's most famous hotel and arguably its best. It is made up of the historic palace building and a modern tower annex, both of which have all the amenities that come with a five star hotel. When I stayed here in February 2009, only the rooms in the tower were available, while the old palace building was still undergoing renovations following the terrible attacks of November 2008. Ground floor shops, restaurants and the swimming pool in the Palace, though, were open for operation. A stay here is unforgettable, for the service is impeccable and the ambiance is loyal to Bombay and its history. For more about the history of the hotel, read the "Things To Do" tips on this page.

Old and new
We did not actually stay here but had a tour of the premises. My daughter stayed here a few years ago and was impressed by the facilities and service.
Unique Quality: The view was of the Gateway of India and the bay.
IThe hotel was built by Tata . He was once refused entry to a hotel and vowed then to build a hotel to equal or better than to that which had ejected him.He ended up founding a chain of hotels and became a captain of industry.
He got an Italian architect to design the hotel. When the hotel was finished the architect committed suicide on discovering that his main entrance , instead of facing the sea, actually faced a small back lane.

The Taj Mahal Hotel
The Taj Mahal Hotel is probably the most famous in Mumbai. It was built in 1903 and has hosted numerous dignitaries and famous people over the years such as Prince Charles, Jackie Onassis, Mick Jagger, Bill Clinton to name only a few. Right behind the Gateway of India it is also a stones throw from Colaba Causeway (Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg). During World War 1 it was used as a 600 bed hospital. The architecture is a mix of Oriental, Florentine and Moorish styles. In 1973 a more modern town wing was added but still blended in perfectly with the old charm of the original building.

Mumbai Ground Zero
Unique Quality: Built in 1903 by the Parsi industrialist J. N. Tata following an episode similar to what happened to Gandhi in South Africa (where he was thrown off a train for trying to ride in the First Class section - European only). Tata was refused entry into a nearby European hotel for being a ‘native’. So he built a much bigger and better hotel which has become Mumbai’s social epicenter (the British hotel has disappeared). Tata would also lead India’s greatest industrial family.

Taj Mahal
Grand old building, much marble, many luxury shops, beautiful pool.
But poor service: got out of the cab, no one picked our luggage. We wheeled our suitcases all the way to the frontdesk. The front desk personel can hardly spare a smile, too costly I guess. Everyone seems too busy in their own little world.
The service at the Taj Mahal was very disappointing and I would suggest to the hotel manager to take a page from the Oberoi Agra, fantastic service.
Save your money and splurge at any Oberoi hotel, they are tops.

Re: Re: From Mumbai to Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal is in Agra which is near Delhi. If you are stationed in Bombay, its very far. There are trains and planes that ply between the two cities very frequently but its a lonnnnnng way from Mumbai to Agra to consider driving. The best option would be by plane to Delhi and then train/bus to Agra from there. Unless you have a lot of time to spare, even trains are not an option as it takes about a day. You can try checking the following links for pricing...
