Grand Hotel or Volga Hotel?

by solesouljoy

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to visit Amritsar for 2 days in Dec. I wonder if anyone has stayed in either of these hotels (Volga or Grand hotel) or any hotel which you would strongly recommend?

Budget: below USD 30
Room: Double (do we need A/C room in Dec?)

Looking for:
- Good service
- clean, comfortable rooms with window, don't need to be luxurious
- located near GT or central places with good eating places

Thanks!

I've heard of people staying in the golden temple...
Is it safe to stay there?
i am travelling with a friend and we are both females in our twenties.

it is safe and free and full board.
If you are non indian you can still stay there but you will have to follow religious rules and regulations ie' covering your head and if female keeping your legs covered etc.
otherwise no probs

I still don't know what to call that leaf made bowl with an unknown cake look-alike object. In this photo, my partner is queuing to obtain the object and I am the one who snap this photo. Up there has a sign written in English "For offering the Holly Communion, take it from here"

Golden Temple - Hari Mandir Sahib

by Willettsworld

The Golden Temple itself is known as the Hari Mandir Sahib, ("Temple of God"), and is the spiritual centre of the Sikh religion. It was built between 1588 and 1601 out of white marble and is gilded with some 750kg of pure gold. The temple was later attacked by the Afghans under Ahmed Shah Abdali and had to be substantially rebuilt in the 1760s. During the day, as part of the daily ritual, the Holy Book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, is recited to music which can be heard around the complex via loudspeakers. More photo's can be found in one of my travelogues.

Wagah Border

by mallyak

A visit to the border is an interesting experience, especially at sun-set, when the retreat ceremony takes place with the Border Security Force (B.S.F.) on the Indian side and The Sutlej Rangers on the Pakistan side putting up a well co-ordinated and spectacular display which compares very favorably with the changing of royal guard in London.

Golden Temple - Sikh Museum

by Willettsworld

The Sikh Museum is located in the northern gateway near the main entrance. It is filled with modern looking paintings of Sikh events in history and of Guru's (practicing preachers). coins, manuscripts and armoury. One section has 13 yellowish photos of guys that had killed themselves for some cause which was a bit disturbing to see. Admission is free.
