Travel Tips for Amritsar

Communial leaf bowl

by Willettsworld

Whilst I was standing on the causeway in order to enter inside the Golden Temple, people were holding these communial bowls made out of plant leafs and containing so kind of food that I couldn't fathom. I'd seen these in Hindu temples all over the country and they are used to carry offerings into the temple.

Our bus to the border

by l_joo

This is a photo I took from the bus that send me from Amritsar city to the border of Atari to cross over to the Islamic Pakistan. The bus is driving okay but the temperature is crazy at 41 C and when I sit inside the bus, the temperature goes higher especially when full of passengers, but it was fun, enjoy. The cost of the bus is less than 40Rupees, about an hour to the border.

Golden Temple - Langar

by SmileyLeSa

Langar, a free meal after Sikh services, is served at all Sikh temples and is open to all people. The food is always vegetarian to abide by the rules of the faith. Langar originally aimed at removing the distinctions of caste and creed when the religion was first instituted. Langar is served to you while you are seated on the floor. This symbolizes the equality of all persons.

Golden Temple - Akal Takht

by Willettsworld

The Akal Takht was built by the sixth Master Guru Hargobind (1606-44) in 1609 and has been the nerve centre for Sikhism ever since. All commandments affecting the community as a whole are issued from here as it houses the seat of the supreme governing body of the Sikh's known as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The original building was replaced with the current structure in 1874 and was servely damaged during Operation Blue Star when the Indian Army attacked the complex in 1984.

Sri Durgiana Temple

by Willettsworld

Not to feel outdone by the Sikh's, the Hindu's also have a marble temple adorned with gold and surrounded by a pool which is reached by a causeway. This temple was also built in the 16th century and is located by heading west towards the train station from the Golden Temple through a myriad of narrow streets that form the city's bazaar. Unlike the Golden Temple, the Durgiana Temple is far quieter (well it was when I visited) and makes for a peaceful break away from the general chaos of the city. More photo's can be found in one of my travelogues.
