Travel Tips for Amritsar

Lohri Fair 13 Jan every year

by RAJASTHANBYCAR

Lohri marks the end of winter and for Punjabis, this is more than just a festival, as it is an example of a way of life. Lohri celebrates fertility and the spark of life. People gather round the bonfires, throw sweets, puffed rice and popcorn into the flames, sing popular songs and exchange greetings. An extremely auspicious day, Lohri marks the sun's entry in to the 'Makar Rashi' (northern hemisphere). There is puja that symbolises a prayer to Agni, the spark of life, for abundant crops and prosperity.

Bus station of Amritsar

by l_joo

According to the guy in the information centre, this is the only bus station of Amritsar. We paid a trishaw guy 40 Rupees to send us here to catch the bus. Don't ask me the location, I just enjoy while I was on the trishaw to look at the streets and peoples and in about 10 minutes, I was here in full awareness. Around here has many vendors selling foods and fruits, so buy some if you need.

The Golden Temple

by MikeySoft

The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is at the center of the pool in the complex

It is the holiest site in Silken and thus you are not allowed to take photos when you are in it. However, I was allowed photos before I entered. You may also be checked for tobacco as it is forbidden.

I entered the temple twice, once during the day, and again at night after I returned form the Pakistan Border flags lowering ceremony. The lines were not too long during the day and almost no line at night.

Please rate this tip and my others if you find them interesting, useful, or like the photos. Thanks

Jallianwallah History Part Four

by mariocibelli

The least amount of firing which would produce the necessary moral and widespread effect it was my duty to produce . . . from a military point of view, not only on those who were present, but more specially throughout the Punjab.'

Dyer was relieved of his command, but he returned to England as a hero to many British admirers, who presented him with a collected purse of thousands of pounds and a jewelled sword inscribed "Saviour of the Punjab."

The Jallianwallah Bagh massacre turned million of patient and moderate Indians from loyal supporters of the British raj into national revolutionaries who would never again trust to British "fair play" or cooperate with a government capable of defending such action. The following year, Mahatma Gandhi launched his first Indian satyagraha ("clinging to the truth") campaign, India's response to the massacre in Jallianwallah Bagh.
