Travel Tips for Bikaner

Desert safaris around Bikaner

by termidor

There are a number of operators in Bikaner offering desert safaris, using 4WD vehicles, camels and a mixture of both. Visitors have the choice of a short trip around areas close to the city, or long day trips covering rarely visited places and beautiful desert villages. Multi-day trips are also available. Prices vary considerably, but beware of very cheap offerings by the touts, who seem to be everywhere, and who channel you towards the big operators. Shop around and expect to pay a reasonable amount for a quality experience. By going with a specialist operator, it's possible to organise a safari focusing on your interests. This is especially important if you want to see elusive desert wildlife, whilst ensuring you don't contribute to damaging the delicate desert environment.

The Story Tellers

by travelinxs

"'In India, sir, anything is possible.'"

Bikaner. A loop up north through the desert by train (with sand billowing into the carriage asphyxiating everything). Cold enough to wear a fleece by day. There is a fort nearby but I do not know where. It is lost in the fog. Very few travelers. We made this ten-hour diversion just to visit a small Hindu temple
30km out of town. A temple with a twist. And now I am here, I really do not know if I want to go anymore...

LATER: The Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok is home to reincarnate storytellers, according to legend. Passing through a set of silver engraved doors and having removed your shoes, you are confronted by them in their incarnated state...RATS!
Tens of thousands of them. This is a working pilgrimage site and not some kind of friek show. People come here to worship these rodents, known as 'kabas'.
