Hi Rob
Thanks for your reply. Vinayak GH is located 1 KM from the bus station and is on the same road as the railway station (half half a KM away) the address is Plot No.4 Kabir Marg, Banipark. I've since booked this accommodation as we are 8 of us and did not want to take a chance as most places cannot accommodate all of us at the same place. I guess I'll soon find out. This is my first trip to the Taj so all excited.
Cheers
Mara

Travel Tips for Jaipur

First impression

by l_joo

First impression was this city look one hundred times much better than Agra, the city we came from five hours ago by 'Luxury Bus' 150Rs. I don't want to mention Agra here, I try to tell what I like about Jaipur in the city's beauty, touristy and cheap delicious foods etc, simply one hundred or one thousand times better than Agra. The city centre area which Hawa Mahal stands was painted one unified color of brown-orange, makes it look like a big construction in Pink. Entrance of Hawa Mahal 5Rs only but 750Rs for Agra's Taj......more tips coming

Elephant Festival

by 10753435

The Elephant Festival is one of the most popular festivals of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Elephant festival has its own charm and is celebrated every year in March on the occasion of Holi, the festival of colors. The festival has a unique concept of its own kind. The colorful festival of Holi is celebrated throughout India, but the festival gets some more spice added to it, when it combines with the Elephant festival of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The Elephants become the major attraction of this festival in their classy attires.

The famous Chaugan ground of Jaipur makes the perfect venue for the occasion. Elephant Festival commences with a parade of decorated Elephants marching towards the ground. Different competitions are organized to enjoy the festival to its full. Elephants engaged in races, polo-matches and tug-of-war with men make the spectators spellbound. Here one can enjoy seeing Elephants at their best. The Elephant keepers (mahouts) decorate their Elephants from head to toe with an exceptional care. The 'Best Decorated Elephant' contest is another feature of this cultural fest.

It is a festival time for Elephants, so they enjoy the festivity by dancing and playing. Live Folk dances and music programs are also arranged for the overall entertainment of people. This festival of Elephants revives the royalty of Jaipur, when people enjoy the glorious Elephant ride in the ground. The Elephants beautifully decked with floral motifs, make ultimate picture for the tourists. Being the time for Holi, tourists play Holi mounting on these painted Elephants. Elephant Festival of Jaipur is unusual, something different and definitely a special treat for the tourists.

take a "tuktuk or auto rickshaw"

by PCuk

The easiest way to get round Jaipur is by flagging down (and you wont escape their noise!) a tuktuk or autorickshaw.
This is a must do experience.Agree a price,if you can(although the fares are minimal) and get in.You will need to hold on tight as they race thru the traffic and be ready to take in the fumes that surround (as you are on the same level as the cars)you...but enjoy.
If youre lucky, like us youll get a non english speaking driver and friend who will not understand, not know where your hotel is and drive the wrong way round a roundabout..grreatt!!

Jantar Mantar - surreal sculptures?

by j-san

no! It's the largest of the five astronomical observatories built by Jai Sing almost 300yrs ago. (One, which I only had a glimpse of, is in Delhi. ) They are not only striking in appearance, but for their incredible accuracy. There are dials for telling the time to the last second and my favorite are the individual zodiac dials... here there is also the impressive 30meter high sundial. What I loved most about this place however was the atmosphere... the combination of wide open space, sculpture like constructions, the sky the sun and the wind...

natural tourist spot in Jaipur!

by otikim

One famous natural spot in Jaipur is the Sambhar salt lake. Sambhar is famous for the country's largest inland salt lake and is 94 kilometers to the west of Jaipur. It is also known for the famous and holy Devayani tank, the palace and Naliasar which is pretty close by. It is one the things you should see when you go to Jaipur and it is near a historic palace which people would also want to see.
